South Korean disclosure — FSC, DART, and the K-IFRS filing regime
South Korean listed-issuer disclosure is regulated by the FSC (Financial Services Commission), with the FSS (Financial Supervisory Service) operating the DART system (Data Analysis, Retrieval and Transfer System) as the central electronic filing and public access portal. Every material disclosure — from annual reports to inside information announcements — flows through DART, making it the single authoritative source for Korean regulatory filings, equivalent in function to EDGAR for the US or EDINET for Japan. The KRX (Korea Exchange) functions as the self-regulatory organisation for listing and market-conduct rules across the three Korean equity markets: KOSPI (large-cap mainboard), KOSDAQ (technology and growth-stage), and KONEX (early-stage SME). FinancialReports ingests DART-published filings within roughly one minute of publication, classifying across all three market segments.
The Korean periodic reporting calendar is built around three core document types: the Saeopbogo-seo (사업보고서, annual business report), the Bungi-bogo-seo (분기보고서, quarterly report), and the Susi-bogo-seo (수시보고서, current or material-event report). The annual Saeopbogo-seo is due within 90 days of fiscal year-end; Korea's December year-end predominance means the annual-report season concentrates in March. Quarterly reports are due within 45 days of each quarter-end, producing one of the most frequent mandatory periodic reporting schedules among major Asian markets. Material-event reports — covering items such as major contracts, capital raises, board changes, and inside information — flow on a continuous basis and represent the largest disclosure volume by count.
Accounting follows K-IFRS (Korean International Financial Reporting Standards), which has been mandatory for all KOSPI-listed companies since 2011 and is fully converged with IFRS as issued by the IASB. The convergence is effectively complete — K-IFRS consolidated financials are comparable to IFRS financials without reconciliation adjustments, a meaningful advantage over markets where local GAAP still diverges. Filing language is Korean; English versions are increasingly available for KOSPI 200 constituents and for issuers with significant foreign institutional ownership, though full English statutory reports remain uncommon outside the top 50 names. The dataset flags language availability on every record.
The DART archive is deep: statutory annual reports go back to the mid-1990s for legacy KOSPI issuers, quarterly reports to the early 2000s, and the continuous current-report stream provides a granular event history for every listed company. All three document types — annual, quarterly, and current — are available as JSON metadata, Markdown body (the same processed text rendered on the public web pages), and original PDF.
