Public-company filings in Belgium are supervised by Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA). Reporting follows IFRS (consolidated); BE GAAP (separate). Filings are most commonly published in Dutch, French and English. Major issuers are listed on BEL 20, BEL Mid and BEL Small. Calendar year predominant.
Belgian disclosure — FSMA, Euronext Brussels, and trilingual reporting
Belgian listed-issuer disclosure is supervised by the FSMA (Autoriteit voor Financiële Diensten en Markten / Autorité des services et marchés financiers) under the EU Transparency Directive and Belgian implementing legislation. Annual reports are filed in iXBRL under the EU ESEF mandate alongside the traditional PDF. Live regulatory announcements — price-sensitive disclosures, insider-transaction notifications, and significant-shareholding threshold crossings — flow through the issuer's distribution provider and are registered in the FSMA's official filing register, searchable at fsma.be.
Belgium's disclosure calendar is dominated by the 31 December fiscal year-end for virtually all listed groups, with annual reports landing between February and April, half-year reports arriving in July–September, and quarterly trading updates — where published — scattered across May and November. Ad-hoc disclosures under MAR Article 17, insider-transaction reports under MAR Article 19, and notification of major shareholding changes under the Belgian Transparency Law represent the bulk of live volume. Accounting follows IFRS for consolidated financials — mandatory for all issuers on Euronext Brussels's regulated market — and Belgian GAAP (Belgisch boekhoudrecht) for separate-entity financials. Belgium's official trilingualism — French, Dutch, and German — means disclosure language practices vary by issuer: most BEL 20 constituents publish in French and Dutch simultaneously, with English as a near-universal third version; smaller issuers may publish in a single national language. The dataset preserves all language versions where present and exposes language metadata on every filing record for downstream filtering.
The practical implication is a structured ESEF-tagged annual archive paired with a continuous ad-hoc disclosure stream — both available as JSON metadata, Markdown body normalised from the original PDF or iXBRL, and the original document for audit trails. The multilingual character of Belgian filings makes language metadata especially useful: a French annual report and its Dutch equivalent are distinct filing records, linked by the same issuer and reporting period.
