The Mexican listed-company landscape — BMV, BIVA, and the IPC

Mexico operates two competing equity exchanges: the BMV (Bolsa Mexicana de Valores), the dominant venue and home to the country's historical listed-company base, and BIVA (Bolsa Institucional de Valores), which launched in 2018 as the first new Mexican exchange in over 130 years and now captures a growing share of volume and new listings. The benchmark equity index is the IPC (Índice de Precios y Cotizaciones), a free-float-adjusted index of the 35 most-liquid BMV issues, rebalanced semi-annually. BIVA operates its own FTSE-BIVA index. Together the two exchanges list approximately 140 reporting issuers, making Mexico's equity market small in listed count but substantial in aggregate market capitalisation relative to regional peers.

Sector composition is dominated by a small number of diversified conglomerates and multinationals whose scale is globally significant. América Móvil (the world's fourth-largest telecom operator by subscribers) and its parent Grupo Carso together represent a major share of IPC weight. FEMSA (Coca-Cola FEMSA, OXXO, Valora) and Grupo Bimbo anchor Consumer Staples. CEMEX and Grupo México anchor Materials. Walmex (Walmart de México) dominates Consumer Discretionary. Banorte, Grupo Financiero Inbursa, and BBVA México lead Financials. The IPC's concentration is high: the top-10 constituents routinely account for 60–65% of index weight, and the contrast with the broader economy — where many mid-cap businesses remain private — is more pronounced than in North American or European benchmarks.

FinancialReports tracks every CNBV-registered listed issuer on BMV and BIVA, classified by sector, industry group, and exchange, with daily refresh from EMISNET and exchange sources. Each company page surfaces complete filings history, ISINs, tickers, cross-listings (América Móvil, CEMEX, FEMSA, Grupo Televisa/TelevisaUnivision all maintain NYSE or NYSE American listings alongside BMV), and IR metadata. The dual-exchange environment is handled natively — a company listed on both BMV and BIVA appears as a single issuer record with both venue relationships surfaced.

Mexico's listing pipeline has historically been thin relative to the economy's size, reflecting a private-company culture and the dominance of family-controlled conglomerates. BIVA's launch was partly intended to address this by offering a competitive listing alternative; since 2018 it has attracted a number of new issuers that chose BIVA over BMV for their primary listing. Both exchange populations are tracked within the same FinancialReports coverage universe, ensuring no gap between the two venues for research workflows.
