Hong Kong hosts approximately 2,600 listed companies across the HKEX Main Board and the GEM board, making it the fifth-largest equity market globally by listed count and one of the deepest in Asia-Pacific. The institutional universe is structured around three headline indices: the HSI (Hang Seng Index, expanded to 50 constituents following the 2021–2022 reform), the HSCEI (Hang Seng China Enterprises Index, tracking H-shares of mainland Chinese companies), and the HSCI (Hang Seng Composite Index, the broad market benchmark). Post-expansion, the HSI was broadened from 50 to include a higher representation of technology and healthcare sectors, partially rebalancing away from its historic financials and real-estate tilt.

Approximately 1,400 of the 2,600 listed companies are mainland Chinese issuers — either H-shares (mainland state-owned or private enterprises listed directly in Hong Kong) or red-chips (mainland enterprises incorporated offshore and listed in Hong Kong). This mainland-China concentration gives the Hong Kong market a structural characteristic that distinguishes it from every other major exchange: coverage of a Hong Kong-listed company frequently provides the only internationally accessible primary-source filings for a Chinese enterprise that is not separately listed on Shanghai (SSE) or Shenzhen (SZSE). Sector composition tilts heavily toward Financials (banks, insurance, property developers), Technology (Tencent, Alibaba HK secondary listing, Meituan, JD.com), and Consumer-facing internet and e-commerce platforms.

For connected-transaction-heavy issuers, the filing count per company can be substantially higher than the European equivalent.

The GEM board captures growth-stage issuers under lighter admission criteria but with full Listing Rules disclosure obligations. GEM companies have historically been smaller and more domestically Hong Kong-oriented, though a cohort of early-stage mainland technology businesses also uses the GEM pathway. New listings, de-listings, and transfers from GEM to Main Board flow through the same ingestion pipeline as the primary market, preserving the historical archive through corporate-action events.
