Viking Energy Royalty Trust was established as an open-ended investment trust dedicated to the energy sector. The Trust's core objective was to generate income for unitholders through the development and production of oil and natural gas from long-life producing properties, historically concentrated in regions such as Alberta and Saskatchewan. Throughout its operational history, Viking pursued growth through strategic consolidation, notably merging with Calpine Natural Gas Trust in 2005. The Trust's independent existence concluded in February 2006 when it completed a plan of arrangement to merge with Harvest Energy Trust, forming a significantly larger conventional oil and gas royalty trust.
