The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that seeks to provide investment results that, before expenses, correspond generally to the price and yield performance of the S&P 500 Index. The S&P 500 Index is a benchmark designed to measure the performance of the large-cap segment of the U.S. equity market. The Trust achieves its objective by holding a portfolio of the common stocks included in the index, with the weight of each stock in the portfolio substantially corresponding to its weight in the index. Launched in January 1993, it was the first ETF listed in the United States and provides investors with diversified exposure to 500 of the largest U.S. companies across all major sectors in a single security.
