Historically, the firm was instrumental in pioneering the discount brokerage concept in the early 1980s through its subsidiary, Marathon Brown. Recognized as the last major independent brokerage house of its era, First Marathon Inc. was acquired by National Bank of Canada via a plan of arrangement agreed upon in June 1999. This acquisition integrated the firm's operations into the National Bank structure, marking the end of its tenure as an independent entity.
