DR. MARKKU WILENIUS

Born on 28 November 1961 (age 58 years), Helsinki, Finland. Dean of Dubai Future Academy. Renowned futurist, author and speaker.

Mr. Markku Wilenius is a renowned futurist, author and speaker with more than 25 years' experience in future studies. His primary interest is in understanding the opportunities and challenges that could arise in the future and bringing this crucial foresight to the attention of society and organisations across the world.

Mr. Wilenius started to work as a Dean of Dubai Future Academy as of 16 February 2020 and previously worked as a Professor of Future Studies at the University of Turku and is also the UNESCO Chair in Learning Society and Futures of Education. He has been a member of the prestigious Club of Rome for 10 years. In 2002, he was part of the Finnish delegation at the landmark Johannesburg Sustainable Development Summit.

Mr. Wilenius worked in the private sector as a senior executive for Allianz, where he led on strategic research and trend assessment. Markku is also the president of three foundations and a partner with various start-up companies.

Mr. Wilenius is a highly accomplished speaker and is often requested at high level conferences. He also delivers lectures, workshops, forums and seminars. To date, he has provided more than 150 radio and television interviews, in addition to over 400 interviews for journals, magazines and daily papers.


PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Mr. Wilenius has worked far over 25 years with futures research and it has given him a tour de forcé of interesting topics to deal with: Future of technologies, culture, food, climate change etc. etc.

Mr. Wilenius also worked with world largest private insurance company Allianz in Munich, leading their work on trends and strategic research.

Mr. Wilenius past research focuses on three major themes:

  • First, research on long-term societal waves, and particularly the emerging next wave. He is also publishing a book on that topic early next year, called "Patterns of the Future", by World Scientific Publishing house.
  • Second, has been working with his research team on future of organizations and work, trying to understand how breaking the old industrial modes of work can bring incredible results.
  • Thirdly, picking up with his research team the issue of future of cities, building an understanding, how cities of the future could be more human focused, healthy and mobile.

Mr. Wilenius is still very much into environmental issues and sustainability. He also works with corporations that wish to understand responsibility in a more fuller sense. Climate change, resource scarcity and natural environments (his old occupation is a professional gardener) are his dear topics.

As a Unesco Chair for Learning Society and Futures of Education, He is now diving deeper into issues of educational issues and learning all around the globe.
