TRADING HALT

The securities of Suncorp-Metway Limited (the “Company”) will be placed in pre-open at the request of the Company, pending the release of an announcement by the Company. Unless ASX decides otherwise, the securities will remain in pre-open until the earlier of the commencement of normal trading on Monday, 9 February 2009 or when the announcement is released to the market.

Dear Rohan,

Request for trading halt under Listing Rule 17.1

Suncorp requests a trading halt in its ordinary shares (ASX Code: SUN) from the commencement of trading today, Thursday 5 February, to the commencement of trading on Monday 9 February.

The trading halt is requested pending the making of an announcement by Suncorp regarding the outcome of a proposed capital raising which will commence today.

For the purposes of Listing Rule 17.1, Suncorp provides the following information:

• the trading halt is necessary as otherwise trading in Suncorp shares may take place in an uninformed market and to allow the capital raising to take place in an orderly fashion;

• the trading halt should remain in place until the earlier of the commencement of trading on Monday 9 February 2009 or when Suncorp makes an announcement regarding the outcome of the capital raising; and

• Suncorp is not aware of any reason why the trading halt should not be granted.
