SmartTrans strengthens billings platform through new agreements with China Unicom and China Telecom

  • New direct-to-phone billing arrangements give access to over 470 million new subscribers

  • SMA’s billing platform now made up of AliPay, UnionPay, ChinaPay, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom

  • Total collective arrangements provide unprecedented reach to all subscribers of China Mobile, China Unicom & China Telecom, which they have reported to total 1.26 billion subscribers.

  • SMA now has agreements in place with all three telcos in China – distinct first mover advantage

2 September 2014: Mobile and online payments platform and logistics software provider SmartTrans Holding Limited (ASX: SMA) (‘SmartTrans’) is pleased to announce that it has significantly strengthened its payments platform after signing agreements providing billing functionality with two of China’s largest state run telecommunications companies – China Unicom and China Telecom.

China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom report that they have 1.26 billion subscribers between them. SmartTrans now has direct-to-phone billing agreements with all three state-run telcos in China, giving the ASX-listed company unprecedented access to these subscribers. This reach also gives SmartTrans a distinct competitive advantage in a market that has significant barriers to entry.

SmartTrans’ billing platform has been significantly strengthened and now consists of agreements providing billing with AliPay, UnionPay, ChinaPay, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. Third parties wanting to transact in China can now use SmartTrans’ platform and gain access to a significantly larger pool of consumers that are signed on customers to these payments and telecommunication providers.

SmartTrans has recently consolidated its operations and focused on its mobile and online billing platform in China as one of the company’s key growth drivers. The company is actively engaged with a number of third parties that wish to transact in China using the company’s proprietary billings platform. SmartTrans is also assessing opportunities whereby it will licence and market third party content, such as popular mobile games Apps, and build in its payments platform to these Apps.

SmartTrans Managing Director Bryan Carr commented: “These new billing agreements represent a major achievement for SmartTrans as they significantly strengthen our payments platform and give ASX investors unrivalled reach to the almost 1.3 billion mobile users in China. For third parties wanting transact in China to such a wide consumer base, our platform represents a wide-reaching payments gateway with agreements with payment providers that are very difficult to secure.

“SmartTrans is also witnessing significant growth in the mobile games market with a number of new Apps becoming popular among Chinese smartphone users. SmartTrans is working with a number of these game developers where it can earn revenue in two ways – by embedding the company’s payments platform into a games App and earning transaction revenue, or by licensing and marketing these Apps to Chinese consumers and earning a percentage of the purchase price of the game.

“We are currently pursuing a number of agreements with App developers and expect to shortly update shareholders on the revenue opportunity and market dynamics. With SmartTrans now focused on two defined revenue streams through its payments platform and logistics software business, the company is now in a strong position to grow revenue.”
