PRIMA BIOMED SECURES JAPANESE PATENT FOR CANCER VAC

Australian health care company Prima BioMed (Prima) (ASX: PRR) is pleased to announce that its subsidiary company, Cancer Vac Pty Ltd, has received a Decision to Grant from the Japanese Patent Office for peptides that mimic the MUC1 antigen; the key cancer antigen under development in its ovarian cancer immunotherapy program.

CVac™ is Prima BioMed’s lead product. It is a therapy treatment for ovarian cancer administered post-surgery and post-chemotherapy to delay relapse and control metastases. Currently Prima is focusing the development of CVac[TM ] to target the tumour specific antigen Mucin-1, an antigen highly expressed on the surface of ovarian cancer cells.

Prima Biomed recently received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for its Investigational New Drug (IND) application to proceed with a Phase IIb Clinical Trial in the US.

The newly granted patent, number 4386209, has an expiry of 27 September 2016. The patent application has also been granted in Australia, Europe, New Zealand and the USA.

Japan has an Orphan Drug Designation program in place that provides among other things 10 year exclusivity once the regulatory agency receives a priority review.
