IMMURON’S INFLUENZA DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM PROGRESSES USING SWINE FLU MODEL

  • IMM‐255 development program progresses using current influenza strain

  • Multi‐strain applicability to be further demonstrated

  • Additional study results anticipated end of 2012

15 August 2012, Melbourne, Australia : Australian biopharmaceutical company Immuron Limited (ASX: IMC), announced that its IMM‐255 influenza candidate is being tested against the current Cal 7 influenza strain more popularly known as Swine Flu. The animal model (ferret studies), which should provide results towards the end of 2012, are designed to demonstrate its ability to prevent, influenza in addition to supporting its applicability claim to current strains of influenza.

Using Immuron’s established platform, IMM‐255 is being developed as dual acting OTC consumer product enriched with anti‐influenza antibodies for both mucosal protection against influenza viruses and the boosting of the immune system to fight infection and, similar to Travelan®, expectations are that IMM‐255 will have a high safety profile.

Previous studies, using the Solomon Islands H1N1 strain, have shown a positive signal demonstrating a temporary interference in virus production in the animals treated with the Immuron antibody preparation. Immuron has also previously demonstrated that IMM‐255 is effective in both treating and preventing infection of PR‐8 strain influenza in a mouse model when delivered nasally.

These additional studies will give us further confidence in delivering this novel Influenza product effectively. Immuron is therefore continuing with the development program to confirm these predictions ” said Immuron’s CEO, Mr Joe Baini, “ We are making material progress in demonstrating the applicability of the Immuron technology in preventing and treating influenza, which will further strengthen our commercial prospects in the global influenza markets ”.

The current direct medical costs in the US alone related to influenza exceed $10B.

About Influenza

Influenza is a viral infection that affects mainly the nose, throat, bronchi and, occasionally, lungs. Infection usually lasts for about a week, and is characterized by sudden onset of high fever, aching muscles, headache and severe malaise, non‐productive cough, sore throat and rhinitis. Yearly influenza epidemics can seriously affect all age groups, but the highest risk of complications occur among children younger than age two, adults age 65 or older, and people of any age with certain medical conditions, such as chronic heart, lung, kidney, liver, blood or metabolic diseases (such as diabetes), or weakened immune systems.

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 35 to 50 million Americans come down with the flu during each flu season. Worldwide, these annual epidemics result in about three to five million cases of severe illness, and about 250,000 to 500,000 deaths. Most deaths associated with influenza in industrialized countries occur among people age 65 or older. Furthermore, more than one million working days are lost each year in Australia alone by people who develop flu and take time off work to recover.
