Immuron HIV program proceeds to expanded human trial

  • Eminent HIV research organisation to expand trialling of Immuron product following initial positive trend in “naive” HIV patients

  • NIH to fund expanded testing while Immuron retains full commercialisation rights

Melbourne, Australia, 21 July 2011: Melbourne biopharmaceutical and development company Immuron Limited (ASX: IMC ) has been ad v ised by its HI V research partner, Case W estern Rese r ve Uni v ersity Center for AIDS Res e arch, Ohio t h at Immuron’ s immune ther a py product, IMM-243, will soon proceed to an ex p anded study o f recently inf e cted (naïve) HIV-1 patient s . To date nin e patients ha v e bee n enrolled an d data generated has show n a positive tr e nd, encoura g ing an expan s ion of the tri a l.

The initial finding s from this tria l were presen t ed this week as a poster a t the Internati o nal AIDS So c iety (IAS) conference i n Rome Italy. IMM-243 wa s shown to p o tentially redu c e plasma lev e ls of microbi a l products in HIV-infected perso n s and thereb y reducing im m une activati o n.

The Cleveland-based AIDS Re s earch group, which is one of the world’s most respec t ed HIV research org a nisations is l e d by Prof Michael Lederm a n. The initial t rial and the i m minent expa n sion will als o be funded by the US National Insti t utes of Healt h (NIH).

Earlier this year, I m muron also announced p o sitive in vitro results for its HIV Microbic i de candidate (IM M -252) which is being developed in conjunction with th e University o f Melbourne.
