HIV PHASE 2 TRIAL COMPLETED: FINAL RESULTS EXPECTED MID YEAR.

19 April 2010, Melbourne and Sydney Australia: Immuron (ASX: IMC) is pleased to announce that its Phase 2 double blind placebo controlled clinical trial (the CORAL trial) has completed the treatment phase. The trial was conducted by the National Centre of HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research based at the University of New South Wales in Australia. All patients have completed their treatments and all trial samples are currently being processed at laboratories throughout Australia, including laboratories at the Universities of Melbourne and New South Wales.

The trial was designed to test the Immuron hyperimmune antibody product, BioGard™ as adjunct therapy to support the immune system of HIV patients undergoing long-term treatment with anti-retroviral drugs. The trial also involved the anti-retroviral drug Raltegravir in a combination of treatment regimes. The trial was sponsored by the National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) via a major program within the National Centre of HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research. The full design of the trial can be found on the NIH web page clincialtrials.gov and its identifier is NCT 00772590. Raltegravir is a pharmaceutical product in use in Australia and many parts of the world, and more information specific to this product can be found at the web site: hivandhepatitis.com/hiv_and_aids/raltegravir_isentress_1

During the six month treatment phase within the CORAL study, there was excellent patient retention and compliance, with 68 of 73 participants finishing their allotted courses of treatment. This provides an early indication that BioGard™ would be acceptable to patients for long term use.

Immuron anticipates being able to release the full clinical trial results in June/July 2010 when all testing is completed. The results will include both primary (immune marker measurements) and secondary (changes in plasma viral load and T cell counts) clinical endpoints. These results will indicate the effectiveness of Immuron’s antibody product in improving immune markers both with and without the antiviral drug.

If the trial results are positive, Immuron will seek to partner with a pharmaceutical company possessing existing anti-retroviral drugs already on the market that could be improved or differentiated using the quickly registrable Immuron product as an adjunct therapy. BioGard™ can be quickly registered due to its suitability for classification as a GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) product in the US and Australia. Preliminary contacts with pharmaceutical companies have been made and will be accelerated when the trial results are known.

Dr Grant Rawlin, Chief Executive Officer of Immuron, stated, “We are delighted that this clinical trial has proceeded so smoothly within the expected timeframe. We eagerly await the results, which if positive, due to the large global market for chronic support products for HIV patients, will have a positive impact for Immuron and also for the many patients being treated with anti-HIV drugs.”

About Immuron Limited

Immuron is a biopharmaceutical company focused on oral immunotherapy using dairy-derived polyclonal antibody products for humans. Current products target infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, while more recent projects are targeting immunotherapy to influence chronic diseases such as HIV, Type 2 Diabetes and fatty liver (NASH), and to prevent and treat respiratory infection with influenza. Immuron’s main scientific alliances are with Hadassah Medical Center (Israel) and the University of Melbourne (Australia).

About BioGard™

Structural and immunological damage to the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract is a characteristic feature of HIV infection and occurs very rapidly during the acute phase of infection. Recent evidence shows that this mucosal damage also leads to bacterial translocation, which further stimulates the immune cells and amplifies the loss of mucosal barrier integrity, leading to further exacerbation of the clinical disease. The process of chronic immune activation is an important mechanism in the development of HIV infection because HIV replicates with maximum efficiency in activated immune cells and subsequently kills them. Several bacterial cell wall antigens are recognised as potent triggers of the innate immune system. The BioGard™ technology potently tackles bacterial immunotoxins in the gut and could play an important role in reversing the immune activation that drives the replication of HIV cells within the body.
