Anthrax Lethal Toxin 100% Neutralized by Anadis antibodies

Anadis Limited (ASX:ANX) is proud to announce that research in conjunction with the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) has shown that bovine colostrum derived antibodies are able to neutralize the cytotoxicity of lethal toxin towards human lung epithelial cells.

This work forms the basis of the Anadis Bio-Defence / Respiratory project focusing on short term immediate protection from the biowarfare agents Anthrax and Plague in battlefield and emergency response situations.

Key Commercial Outcomes

The important differentiator to previous antibody work in this area is the derivation of these polyclonal antibodies (naturally raised in an animal) from bovine colostrum collected from immunised dairy cows. This work displayed efficacy results equivalent to previous monoclonal (laboratory manufactured) antibody trials.

The key advantage, besides the enhanced affinity of polyclonal antibodies over monoclonal antibodies, is the enormous cost savings – potentially in the order of 95% or greater.

Intellectual Property

This work covered by an Anadis patent "Method of Prophylaxis of Infection", is focused on binding proteins (antibodies or antibody fragments) directed against bacteria (in particular Anthrax and Plague). This patent has entered the national phase in Australia, Canada, Israel, UK, USA and Europe.

Research Details

This research carried out by the DSTO focused on the evtotoxic effect of Anthrax Lethal Toxin and the protective action of specific bovine antibodies against lethal toxinprotective antigen (PA) and Lethal Factor (LF) on human lung cells.

This in vitro research, carried out in human lung epithelial cell cultures, showed that purified bovine colostrum antibodies for both PA and LF were equally effective in providing 100% protection from the cytotoxic effects of Lethal Toxin, and the treatments were well tolerated by these very sensitive cells.

The full body of this work is published in the prestigious Journal of Applied Toxicology and is available online in Wiley InterScience at http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgibin/fulltext/112140239/PDFSTART

Anadis would like to commend Brian M. Paddle from the DSTO and Victor K. Wong and Brian D. Muller from Anadis for the success in this research endeavour.

Commercial Opportunities

Pending the success of further animal model trials Anadis hope to manufacture a preventative therapy and diagnostic kit for military personnel and civilian emergency management organisations.

Anadis sees future potential for this research in civilian respiratory medical applications for the treatment of Asthma and Hay Fever.

Anadis, a Melbourne based biopharmaceutical company is focused on Nutraceutical and Pharmaceutical research and development. Anadis is a specialist in the development of bovine colostrum derived products for therapeutic use in humans. Anadis projects include:

Anadis' first commercialised product: Travelan has been proven in hospital clinical trials to significantly decrease the risk of Travelers Diarrhoea and the symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders. Travelan is prepared from bovine colostrum, from cows hyperimmunized against the 13 most common strains of $E$ coli – the most common cause of Travelers Diarrhoea, working through the process of passive immunity transfer to the surface of the intestine.

Travelan has recently received a "Green Light' for sales in the US and is currently being considered for other markets including: Canada, Singapore, India, Korea, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Malaysia and the UK and EU.

$EV-71$ a bioactive protein based preventative product against Enterovirus 71, a debilitating polio like disease affecting children in Taiwan and other parts of Asia.

Bio-Shield 10 a range of "bioshielding" technologies which protect delicate molecules, enzymes and proteins, initially targeted for use in the pro-biotic market.

Development into an Immune Stimulating Infant Formula is underway, initially destined for the Asian market.

Pyloran, which has been clinically proven to reduce levels of bacteria in the stomach and reduce the symptoms of H.pylori associated gastritis - Anadis is also in early development of a H.pylori vaccine.
