EV 71 Commercialisation Team Strengthened

Anadis Limited (ASX:ANX) is pleased to welcome Dr David Anderson to our Scientific Advisory Panel. Dr Anderson is an internationally recognised virologist with particular expertise in picornaviruses (like Enterovirus 71). Dr Anderson has been brought on to further support the Anadis push into virology with the commercialisation of the EV71 project.

Dr Anderson is Deputy Director of the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health, and a Senior Research Fellow of the National Health and Medical Research Council. He holds a PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Virology, completed in 1989 at the University of Melbourne and Fairfield Hospital.

Dr Anderson has served on the World Health Organisation (WHO) Working Group on the Prevention and Control of Viral Hepatitis in the Western Pacfic Region. Dr Anderson is Chief Scientific Officer of Select Vaccines Ltd (ASX:SLT), a biotechnology company established in 2003.

About Enterovirus 71 (EV-71)

Enterovirus 71, a polio like disease, is one of the viruses that causes 'hand, foot and mouth' or 'slapped cheek' disease in young children. Mild symptoms usually include a rash and quieter than normal behavior, while a significant proportion of younger children can develop nervous signs such as fits, paralysis and even death. Fatalities can occur for approximately one quarter of the children affected by the severe form of the disease.

Enterovirus 71 isn't as yet well known in Australia, however in the Asia-Pacific region – mainly Taiwan and China – major outbreaks are becoming increasingly common. Enterovirus 71 is an emerging 'disease state', and medical authorities are comparing the disease with the spread of polio in Europe and North America in the late 19th century. Outbreaks of Enterovirus 71 are mainly confined to Asia but have recently been reported in Europe and Australia.

There have been outbreaks of EV 71 recently in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore, and earlier this year in Vietnam where 25 deaths where reported in children under 3 years of age.

The EV-71 Project

Anadis and the Taiwan Development Centre for Biotechnology (DCB) have now developed a protective therapy against EV-71. It has been proved that the methodology developed will provide effective candidate materials for controlling EV-71.

DCB estimates for Taiwan alone, a demand in excess of 110 million doses annually – this represents a conservative 30-35% total market penetration for the product. The preventative is taken once a day during the high risk period (approximately 100 days during the summer months). Anadis anticipates initial sales to commence during 2006.

The EV-71 project is one of major commercial significance to Anadis. Under the terms of the agreement, Anadis receives the exclusive global manufacturing rights of the bioactive materials, and the product, for a minimum of five years; on going royalties from all sales in Asia; and sole distribution rights for all markets outside Asia. Anadis is also currently in discussions with DCB aimed at giving Anadis a significant role in the marketing of this product in Taiwan.
