ANTI-DIARRHOEA PRODUCT ENTERS PRODUCTION
During the last few days Anadis has commenced the collection of hyperimmunised colostrum for a new product developed by Anadis to aid in the prevention of travellers diarrhoea
The product is derived from milking (dairy) cows that have been preconditioned with a unique vaccine developed by Anadis scientists. The vaccine contains fourteen antigens against the most common enterotoxigenic E.coli that account for the majority of cases of traveller's diarrhoea. We also successfully applied to have the vaccine registered by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA): a necessary prerequisite to allow the vaccine to be injected into dairy cows. We were required to prove to the satisfaction of the APVMA the safety of the vaccine that we had developed. The vaccination of animals commenced in July with multiple vaccinations, over a predetermined period being given to each cow prior to calving. Initially we have been given authority to vaccinate 1,200 dairy cows for our first commercial collection with this number subject to increase in line with product demand
This first batch of product will allow us to make an initial launch of the product into the Melbourne market. Distribution and marketing channels are currently being finalised.
Registration of the final product with Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA) is well underway. Additionally, accelerated shelf-life and stability trials of the product have commenced with final data anticipated early in the new year.
It is expected that the current colostrum collection will continue for the next twelve weeks. This hyperimmunised colostrum will then be processed into a powder at the Tatura Milk Industries manufacturing plant. The powder will then be converted into tablets and packaged in tamper proof packs at a TGA registered facility in early 2004 with a view to launching the product as soon as possible thereafter.
The company has also taken the decision to change the name of this product from Travelan to Preventyn to avoid any confusion by consumers with the Travacalm motion sickness product manufactured by Pan Pharmaceuticals. The name change will become effective immediately.
