FUNDS GRANTED FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF BIOLOGICAL CONTROL MEASURE FOR HIV
21st April 2010, Melbourne and Sydney Australia: Immuron is pleased to announce that the University of Melbourne’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology has been granted $160,000. This funding is from the Australian Centre for HIV and Hepatitis Virology to continue successful work with Immuron on an antibody-based ‘microbicide’ control measure for HIV.
The funding of this work, derived from the Population Health Division of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, was approved after scientific peer review of initial joint University of Melbourne / Immuron research.
The research, using glycoprotein-based vaccines (‘env’ vaccines) developed at University of Melbourne by Dr Damian Purcell and his team, has successfully created sets of dairy-derived polyclonal antibodies that neutralised many strains (or ‘Clades’) of HIV virus.

The HIV-neutralising antibodies produced using Immuron technologies are suitable for large-scale production and future studies will develop a mucosally-applied product to protect uninfected patients from HIV infection in high-risk settings.
The next step will investigate the use of improved Env-glycoprotein vaccine formulations to produce antibodies and assess the ability of these antibodies to block HIV virus in biological fluids. If this work is successful the project will advance into safety and efficacy testing in animal models.

I am pleased to see this recognition and endorsement of the company’s science.”

About Immuron Limited
Immuron is a biopharmaceutical company focused on oral immunotherapy using dairy-derived polyclonal antibody products for humans. Current products target infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, while more recent projects are targeting immunotherapy to influence chronic diseases such as HIV, Type 2 Diabetes and fatty liver (NASH), and to prevent and treat respiratory infection with influenza. Immuron’s main scientific alliances are with Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Centre (Israel) and the University of Melbourne (Australia).
About HIV and Microbicides
It is estimated that 35 million people across the globe are infected with HIV. The medical cost of HIV in the US alone is estimated to be approximately USS$15 billion per year. In some countries public health programmes have achieved modest gains in reducing HIV transmission through behavioural change, but the worldwide picture is one of increasing rates of infection. Although the use of condoms has slowly increased in countries most severely affected by the HIV epidemic, many vulnerable women are unable to ensure they are used. An effective and affordable vaginal microbicide, whose use could be controlled by women, would represent an important addition to the battle against HIV infection.
