Melbourne based clinical stage biopharmaceutical company; Immuron Limited, has appointed Dr. Arun J. Sanyal, Professor of Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University Center, to be the global Principal Investigator for the Company sponsored upcoming clinical trial for the treatment of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Dr. Arun J. Sanyal is Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Division of Gastroenterology at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. Professor Sanyal is the immediate past President of the American Association for Study of Liver Diseases and a member of the American College of Gastroenterology. Professor Sanyal is the author of more than 80 articles in publications including, Gastroenterology , Hepatology and Journal of Infectious Diseases .

Immuron’s Chief Executive Officer Joe Baini said: “We are honoured that Professor Sanyal, who is a globally recognised leader in the study of liver diseases, will provide expertise in the development of our NASH product candidate. We are also delighted that Professor Sanyal has agreed to be the principal investigator for the upcoming clinical trial of IMM-124E and will add immense value to this important program.”

Professor Sanyal said: “Immuron’s NASH product candidate is of particular interest to me based on the results achieved to date. This drug candidate has shown promise to systemically address NASH.”

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, or fatty liver disease, is a condition that is becoming increasingly prevalent in developed nations and is linked to increases in obesity rates and Type 2 diabetes. It is estimated almost 10 per cent of Americans aged 40-60 are affected, with the incidence seemingly more prevalent in women.

IMM 124E is an orally administered drug candidate developed from Immuron’s proprietary drug technology platform.

The previous phase 11a clinical trials of IMM 124E demonstrated its safety and efficacy against NASH, by clinically improving liver enzyme markers and key Type 2 diabetes markers. Early results also showed IMM 124E was able to decrease blood triglyceride levels and improve key pathways linked to chronic inflammation.

About NASH

NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis) is one of the most common liver diseases in the western world. It is associated with obesity, diabetes and hyperlipidaemia. It affects 5% of the lean population, 20% of the obese population and 50% of morbidly obese people. It resembles alcoholic liver disease, but occurs in people who drink little or no alcohol. The major feature in NASH is fat in the liver along with inflammation and damage. NASH can be severe and can lead to cirrhosis, in which the liver is permanently damaged and scarred and no longer able to function properly. The potential NASH market is estimated to be a multi-billion dollar market.
