ASX Announcement
Australian Infrastructure Fund (AIX)
14 August 2012
AIX airports deliver continued passenger growth for the 2012 financial year
AIX today reported total growth in passenger numbers of 1.9 percent for its airport portfolio for the financial year to 30 June 2012 when weighted by AIX’s proportional interests, in comparison to the previous corresponding period (pcp). For the month and the quarter to 30 June 2012, total passenger numbers increased on the pcp, by 6.7 percent and 3.6 percent respectively.
For the financial year ended 30 June 2012, total passenger growth at Perth Airport was 10.3 percent, with domestic and international passengers increasing 11.7 percent and 6.9 percent respectively on the pcp. The continued strength in domestic passenger numbers is largely attributable to continued growth in fly-in / fly-out volumes related to the oil, gas and mining sectors in the region, from both interstate and intrastate locations. In the international terminal, passenger numbers have continued to benefit from the strong Australian dollar, which has supported leisure travel into Asia, particularly Bali.
Total passengers at Melbourne Airport for the financial year were slightly above the pcp. While domestic volumes declined by 2.0 percent, the Airport achieved 7.9 percent growth in international patronage as new international services commenced following the Airport’s strategic focus on attracting Asian travellers. Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) reported a slight decline in its overall passenger numbers of 1.0 percent for the financial year, which is largely attributed to the strong Australian dollar and subdued global economic conditions having negatively affected leisure travel to the Gold Coast.
For the month of June, when weighted by AIX’s proportional interests, total passenger numbers were 6.7 percent above the pcp. Of this, domestic and international passenger numbers increased by 7.6 percent and 5.4 percent respectively on the pcp. QAL’s Gold Coast Airport achieved a particularly strong increase in international passenger volumes of 20.7 percent on the pcp, with the new international airline Scoot commencing services and a rise in travellers on New Zealand routes. Domestic passenger numbers at Gold Coast Airport also rose 8.1 percent on the pcp. This positive comparison is partially attributable to one-off events in the pcp, including disruptions caused by the Chilean volcanic ash cloud and Tiger Airways’ suspended domestic services.
Passengers through AIX’s European airports, on a consolidated basis for the financial year to 30 June 2012, were largely consistent with the pcp. While Athens Airport underperformed as a result of the continued economic uncertainty in Greece, each of Dusseldorf and Hamburg airports performed well despite the uncertain financial conditions in Europe, with consolidated passenger growth of 4.5 percent, 2.3 percent and 3.6 percent for the month, quarter and financial year to 30 June 2012 respectively.
AIX Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Pollock, said: “The AIX portfolio of airports has delivered positive passenger growth for each of the month, quarter and financial year to 30 June 2012. This performance is due to several positive factors, including continued competition between the domestic airlines and increased capacity, as well as the success of the Australian airports in attracting new services, particularly from international carriers. Despite the challenging economic environment, the airports comprising the AIX portfolio have proven to be resilient and continue to perform for our securityholders.”
The table below highlights the year-on-year total passenger growth for the month, quarter and financial year ended 30 June 2012:
