*** MEDIA RELEASE ***

$100 MILLION TERMINAL REDEVELOPMENT TAKES OFF

Travellers through Gold Coast Airport will notice changes next month as the airport’s $100million terminal redevelopment takes off.

Gold Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer Paul Donovan said preliminary tarmac and drainage works would start this month before reconstruction of the terminal began in July.

“These initial works involve moving the tarmac apron lighting to allow for the expansion of the terminal and bedding down our airside trunk services like stormwater, sewer and power,” Mr Donovan said.

Mr Donovan quickly added the preliminary works were being staged to ensure no disruption to airline passenger services and minimal night works for local residents.

The project will kick off stage one of the redevelopment set to more than double the size of the existing building to 27,000 square metres to cater for forecast passenger growth over the next ten years. A further expansion (stage 2) is proposed to commence as demand dictates.

“When finished, our terminal will be the first purpose-built facility specifically designed to cater for low cost airlines and their passengers,” Mr Donovan said.

“Our focus is to ensure the terminal is fast and efficient for airlines and their passengers by taking a common user approach with one main check-in area for all airlines with self service kiosks, a single baggage collection and screening point, and one main departures and arrivals area.”

The entire $100million redevelopment is fully funded by Gold Coast Airport Pty Limited and its shareholders, a 100% Australian private company which owns and operates Gold Coast Airport.

Mr Donovan said the interior design and fit out also had been finalised with retail contracts to be let in the coming weeks.

“When completed, visitors will feel like they are on holidays from the moment they step off the plane,” Mr Donovan said.

“While the colours and use of natural light will add an air of sophistication, we’ve opted to move away from architectural statements and focus on the amazing views of the hinterland with two storey floor to ceiling glass looking across the tarmac.

“Through the screening points there will be a large retail and dining area offering a range of branded dining options – from ‘grab-n-go’ style venues to more sophisticated coffee bars.

“We’ve also added some unique features for our customers including a convenience store for passengers staying in self contained apartments, a prayer room for our international guests and parents rooms in each toilet block.

“What’s more the building will be fully air-conditioned, a welcome change on hot summer days.”

Key features of the new terminal building will include:

  • Common check-in area with 36 check-in desks plus self service kiosks;

  • Open high ceilings with two storey floor to glass windows looking across the runway to the hinterland;

  • Short walking distances and easy floor plan for speed of access;

  • Full check bag screening as required by Federal legislation;

  • Double current baggage capacity and expanded inspection facilities for international arrivals;

  • Increased oversize baggage area for regular transport of golf clubs and surf boards;

  • Common screening area for all departures with an additional screening point for Liquids Aerosols and Gels for departing international guests;

  • Two swing gates to extend or minimize the domestic/international lounge mix;

  • Very targeted mix of retail and food and beverage based on three years of passenger research. Retail outlets will include gifts and accessories, surfwear and lifestyle options, confectionary and internet points;

  • The Qantas Club will remain in its existing location;

  • Hard flooring for high traffic areas with carpet for dwelling and resting areas (such as the departure lounges);

  • A neutral base pallet with splashes of colour to keep it timeless;

  • Landside currency exchange, convenience store, bus information and the Rainbow Bay ale house.

  • An additional currency exchange in the departures area;

  • Parents room in each toilet block;

  • 30% increase in the duty free area for international visitors;

  • Expanded area for international meeters and greeters;

  • Use of locally sourced products where available.

The terminal redevelopment is scheduled to be completed by March 2010. ADCO Constructions was appointed as the principal design and construct contractor for the project in October last year.
