Queensland Airports reports 6.8 percent passenger growth in October 2008
Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) has recorded strong growth in October 2008 with total passenger numbers up 6.8 percent over the previous corresponding period.
The solid passenger growth was driven by the Low Cost Carriers (LCC’s) AirAsia X, Jetstar, Virgin Blue and Tiger Airways. It should be noted a number of additional LCC flights are scheduled to commence in December 2008.
AIX Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Pollock said “The passenger numbers demonstrate the quality of the QAL portfolio and in particular the ability of Gold Coast Airport to perform well in such a challenging economic environment.”
AIX owns 49.1 percent of QAL and it represents 14.3 percent of the AIX portfolio.
Attached is a release from QAL

QUEENSLAND AIRPORTS SUSTAINS GROWTH
The three airports owned and operated by Queensland Airports Ltd (QAL) at Gold Coast, Townsville and Mount Isa continued to achieve passenger movement growth for the month of October.
“Although our growth figures are a little more subdued than previous periods, it is satisfying that we have been able to sustain increases in passenger movements through all of our airports during these challenging times,” QAL Managing Director Dennis Chant said.
The following passenger movements were recorded at the three airports during October 2008 as follows:
| Gold Coast | ||
|---|---|---|
| • Domestic | 354,778 | (increase of 2.8% over October 2007) |
| • International | 34,672 | (increase of 112.4% over October 2007) |
| • Total | 389,450 | (increase of 7.8% over October 2007) |
| Townsville | ||
| • Total | 138,480 | (increase of 4.9% over October 2007) |
| Mount Isa | ||
| • Total | 17,771 | (increase of 0.8% over October 2007) |
“The stand-out achievement was the 112% increase in international passengers through Gold Coast Airport reflecting the introduction of direct services from Osaka, Japan by Jetstar and the twelfth month of operations by AirAsia X from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,” Mr Chant said.
“This is a new monthly record for international passenger movements through Gold Coast.
“Handling this explosive growth in international numbers during a major rebuild of our terminal facilities has been particularly challenging, but it is a wonderful indication of the potential the Gold Coast has to attract visitors from key Asian markets.”
