Major entertainment, hospitality and leisure operator Event Hospitality & Entertainment Limited (“EVT”) today announced net profit after income tax for the half year to 31 December 2016 of $59.4 million, representing a decrease over the prior comparable half year period of $17.4 million or 22.6%. The normalised result before interest and income tax expense was $90.8 million, representing a decrease over the prior comparable half year period of $18.9 million or 17.3%.
In announcing the result, EVT Group Managing Director Mr David Seargeant commented: “The Exhibition segment was impacted by the comparatively softer film slate and particularly by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story which was unable to match the incredible success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens which was released in the prior half year period. The result was further impacted by recently opened cinema sites that are currently in the establishment phase and the wind down of the virtual print fee arrangements. In the Hotel segment, underlying strength was impacted by the shortterm room stock loss at those hotels undergoing refurbishment and redevelopment”. Mr Seargeant added: “The standout success for the half year was Thredbo where a good 2016 season achieved strong growth”.
Other major film releases for the half year included Suicide Squad ; Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ; The Secret Life of Pets ; and Finding Dory .
The Chairman Mr Alan Rydge announced a fully franked interim dividend of 20 cents per share consistent with the prior year’s interim dividend.
EVT is the market leading cinema group in Australia and New Zealand operating primarily under the Event and BCC brands and in Germany as the dominant exhibitor under the Cinestar brand. EVT is currently ranked the 10[th] largest cinema group globally. In the Hotel and Resort markets, EVT operates under the Rydges, QT, Atura and Eventhouse brands. EVT also owns the Thredbo Alpine Resort and has significant property holdings.
