The company designs, builds, finances and operates communal and industrial water and wastewater systems and has a 1,000 km sewer network, 1,100 km of drinking water pipes and total sewage plant capacity for a population of 8.5 million people. WTE is already a successful player in the European market, operating 69 sewage plants with branches and project companies in Austria and ten other EU countries, EU applicant countries, Russia and the Ukraine. Up to now, WTE was owned by Berlinwasser Service GmbH, a fully owned subsidiary of Berlinwasser Holding AG in which the state of Berlin has a 50.1% holding and Vivendi as well as RWE an equal share of the remaining 49.9%. WTE has its company seat in Essen. The transaction is subject to approval by the antitrust authorities, but should take effect on October 1, 2003. Following the purchase of the Lower Austrian NÖSIWAG in 2001, which is now named “evn wasser”, with the take-over of WTE the EVN Group has strengthened its profile as a leading supplier of know-how services in the area of water supply and wastewater treatment.
