In the spring of 2017, a new Department of Radiology will be opened in the Latvian Maritime Medical Centre (Latvijas Jūras medicīnas centrs) (LMMC); its construction phase has just experienced a topping-out ceremony. The Department of Radiology in the LMMC will be one of the most advanced and innovative cancer diagnostics and treatment centres in Eastern Europe. 1.11 million Euros have been invested in the creation of this centre, and substantial additional resources are going to be invested in the next few years for the development of activities in cancer diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation.
The aim of the project is to promote the availability of oncological examinations and treatment services in Latvia and the nearby region, as well as to develop a public-private co-operation in the delivery of healthcare services to the population, thus improving the quality of life and prolonging the work ability of oncological patients.
With the opening of the Department of Radiology in the spring of 2017, it will become possible to diagnose malignant tumours (prostate cancer, neuroendocrine tumours, advanced bone cancer) and metastases of a very small size (~3 mm), as well as to identify relapses early, and to plan a treatment optimally and efficiently.
The project of the Department of Radiology in the LMMC was conducted by the architectural firm Nams; the construction is carried out by Selva Buve Ltd. It will be opened in the spring of 2017.
The Latvian Maritime Medical Centre is a private medical institution established in 1944, that provides a wide range of qualitative healthcare services to the public. The LMMC consists of the Sarkandaugava outpatient health care centre, Central Hospital, Vecmilgravis Hospital and Vecmilgravis primary health care centre, as well as the Northern Diagnostic Centre. Shares of the S/c Latvian Maritime Medicine Centre are listed on the Riga Stock Exchange.
