Munich-based GEOT has developed a magnetically induced, invasive process to promote and accelerate bone healing known as electro-osteostimulation. aap has until the end of next year to exercise an option to acquire a further 21% of GEOT. The new GEOT process can be combined with all osteosynthesis implants on the market and with the cement-free hip prosthesis developed by aap. The biological effect of electro-osteotherapy consists of making up for the loss of bioelectricity in the injured bone and stimulating the cells to produce the bone tissue needed for the fracture to heal. Electro-osteotherapy is used as a complementary technology, especially in treating pseudarthrosis (joint creation by a nonhealing bone) and femoral head necrosis (death of the head of the femur) and, preventively, in femoral neck fractures. The use of electro-osteotherapy in the cases mentioned reduces the complication rate, ensures the success of treatment and cuts the time needed for treatment. In connection with the introduction of flat-rate payments for hospital treatment these points make the process an economically interesting addition to the range of therapies available in traumatology and orthopedics.
