ASX/MEDIA RELEASE

Dated: WHN 11 September 09

PRODUCTION UPDATE – KENTUCKY SHALE GAS

  • 2 wells currently producing 120 mcf per day

  • 7 existing wells being prepared for re-completion and connection

- Forward plan in place to increase current production using SRS technology and to acquire additional land holdings whilst exploiting low cost oil opportunities

The Company is pleased to provide an update regarding the start-up of its Kentucky shale gas project in Eastern Kentucky where it holds a 50% interest in the venture.

The necessary equipment to process the gas (dessicant dryer) has been provided and is now operational with 2 wells currently tied in and producing.

These two wells, which were completed last year and have been venting, are attached and providing stable 60 mcf/day EACH of gas into pipeline with no visible decline in production.

The intention of the operator is to complete the other 7 wells and to drill further wells in the next quarter based upon what has been learned in order to employ improved completion techniques while coproducing from oil horizons.

WHL Energy believes that with the lower cost of drilling these wells and higher flow rates this current field will provide WHL with low risk, good internal rate of return and stable cash flow going forward.

The Kentucky Property was acquired by the Company on July 23, 2008 and included nine existing wells on 22,000 acres of leased land with ready access to market via existing pipeline infrastructure.

The current rights issue will provide the company with cash ability to drill and complete additional wells whilst also acquiring additional land in prospective areas with an emphasis on oil.

The recent workover and completion program has proven that there is consistent natural gas potential across the Kentucky Property, confirming that there is low-risk drilling for the Devonian Shale target. There are more than 200 potential drilling locations adjacent to the existing infrastructure, which means that the Kentucky Property is an excellent candidate for a low-cost, multi-well drilling program designed to generate cash early in the project development and increase the net present value of the reserves on the property.

As the results are positive, the Joint Venturers (including WHL Energy) have decided to expand their land position in the area and to drill higher impact wells, including both oil and gas with potential to utilise the SRS technology. WHL is completing both due diligence and negotiations on various prospective adjoining oil producing properties, where there are numerous non-producing oil wells and where SRS technology can be performed. The properties are expected to exceed 30,000 acres of land and 75 wells currently with production capacity. Moreover, these additional opportunities are expected to be higher impact wells that may yield higher rates.

CEO, David S. Kahn, states, “I am extremely pleased with these early stage results, this is a positive step towards the company’s goal of achieving short term production of 100 bopd in the region which will provide the company with sustainable cash flow. WHL will continue to focus on low risk, distressed assets in this environment and believes that Southern and Eastern Kentucky possesses the necessary characteristics to result in early positive cash flow for the Company. These characteristics include mature basins with good reservoir understanding and low cost of land acquisition and operations.

This strategy is aligned with our early goal of continuing to accumulate significant shale gas in the region as many of above lands do possess significant Devonian shale gas reserves which will further add to WHL Energy's current inventory of gas in Kentucky WHL expects to actively drill and complete wells in the shale gas as there is historical evidence of further support in the gas prices during the northern winter”

Yours Faithfully,

Ian Mitchell Company Secretary WHL Energy Limited
