The basic earnings per share is based on the weighted average number of 1,789,222,620 (1998/99: 1,740,700,881) shares in issue during the period. The diluted earnings per share is based on 1,816,019,758 (1998/99: 1,777,352,613) shares which is the weighted average number of shares in issue during the period plus the weighted average number of 26,797,138 (1998/99: 36,651,732) shares deemed to be issued at no consideration if all outstanding share options had been exercised. (b) First three quarters The calculation of basic and diluted earnings per share are based on the Group's profit attributable to shareholders of HK$320,825,000 (1998/99: HK$199,108,000). The basic earnings per share is based on the weighted average number of 1,763,849,245 (1998/99: 1,729,791,790) shares in issue during the period. The diluted earnings per share is based on 1,788,685,525 (1998/99: 1,764,730,023) shares which is the weighted average number of shares in issue during the period plus the weighted average number of 24,836,280 (1998/99: 34,938,233) shares deemed to be issued at no consideration if all outstanding share options had been exercised. The basic and diluted earnings per share for the nine months ended 31 December 1998 are 11.5 HK cents and 11.3 HK cents respectively.
