The Manager Company Announcements Office ASX Ltd

Media Release

Enerji’s waste heat technologies promise to save miners $12.3M per decade

.. New technology to mitigate rising fuel expenditure

.. Report warns spiraling costs threaten mining future

West Australian clean energy experts say new technologies can buffer mining companies from the impact of rising production costs threatening the future of the multi-billion dollar resources industry.

Chairman of Perth-based clean power company Enerji Limited (ASX:ERJ) Ian Campbell said improved power supply strategies could save miners up to $750,000 per unit in the first year, with projected savings of more than $12 million over 10 years.

He said his company’s core Opcon Powerbox technology, which uses waste heat for energy instead of diesel fuel on remote mine sites and power stations, immediately achieved gross cost savings of almost $1.75 million – or the price of 1.6 million litres of diesel fuel per annum.

Mr Campbell was speaking out following the release of a damning report into rising mining production costs.

The Opportunity at Risk report, prepared for the Minerals Council of Australia, warns Australia’s standing as a minerals producer is under serious threat because of rising production costs, with $121 billion at stake over the next 20 years.

It pinpoints diesel expenditure as a major contributor to spiraling production costs, accounting for up to quarter of mine operating expenses. It further suggests moves to scrap diesel fuel tax offsets would result in 4-7% cost increases for many projects.

“Australian mining companies must embrace new technologies to offset rising production costs if this country is to continue capitalising on its vast resources potential,” Mr Campbell said.

“Enerji has an immediately deployable, clean energy technology promising substantial cost savings. Mining company operators have an opportunity to cut costs and remain competitive – the time to do this is now.”

Mr Campbell said installation of the first Opcon Powerbox was almost complete at the Carnarvon Power Station site in Western Australia, with the technology expected to be operational within weeks.

This Swedish designed technology does not alter the net output of a power station, but reduces fossil fuel usage by up to 12%.
