Perth, Western Australia: Global marine safety equipment provider, Mobilarm Limited (ASX: MBO ) today announced that the company has received a contract to supply 140 Crewsafe V100 VHF DSC Maritime Survivor Locating Devices (MSLD) for Portugal’s National Fisherman’s Association (Associação Pró-Maior Segurança dos Homens do Mar) (“APMSHM”). The order is part of a Portuguese Government initiative to strengthen the safety measures for personnel operating in the commercial fishing industry.
The order was secured following government approval from the Portuguese Ministry for Fishing and Agriculture to prepare and introduce new legislation making safety equipment mandatory for all commercial fishing operations.
The Ministry has also established a permanent committee, of which the APMSHM is a participant, formed to reduce the number of commercial fishing fatalities and man overboard incidents. The committee has issued a directive stipulating that it is mandatory for fisherman operating close to shore on open boats up to 9m to be equipped with personal radio distress beacons.
The APMSHM order was part of a €4 million tender for the safety equipment and beacons to address the new Ministerial requirements. The Mobilarm device was selected for the sub 9m fleet
following the efforts of Mobilarm’s Portuguese distributor, Zodport Equipamentos A. e Engenharia S.A. (“Zodport”).
Mobilarm Chief Executive Officer, Lindsay Lyon, said: “We are pleased to have secured a substantial order from the Portuguese National Fisherman’s Association, significantly strengthening Mobilarm’s presence in the global commercial fishing sector.
“Mobilarm is well positioned to capitalise on the broader expected roll-out of Maritime Survivor Locating Devices [MSLD] for all Portuguese commercial fishing operators, which follows Spain’s legislative lead with 38,000 MSLD being utilised in the commercial fishing sector as part of a safety initiative. The devices currently being utilised by Spain were supplied by MRT, with Mobilarm recently announcing the successfully acquisition of MRT last month.
“Field testing by Portuguese fishermen has already taken place, and the supply contract is further validation of Mobilarm’s leading technology. This has continued to be reinforced through recent contract wins with blue-chip organisations such as the US Navy, BHP Billiton and Apache Energy,” Mr. Lyon added.
