Veidekke ASA: To extend and renovate a nursing home in Sandefjord

Veidekke ASA: To extend and renovate a nursing home in Sandefjord

Veidekke has signed a contract with Sandefjord municipality to build a new

building and renovate the existing building stock at Nygård nursing home.

Sustainable energy solutions have been chosen, and the new building will be made

of solid wood. This is a design and build contract, valued at NOK 386 million,

excluding VAT.

The new wing will have a floor area of approximately 7,500 m[2] and will have 72

residents' rooms. The three-storey building will be built of environment

-friendly solid wood, with a concrete basement under half the building. The

existing buildings that are going to be renovated have a floor area of some

10,000 m[2] and will have 108 residents' rooms after refurbishment. Here

Veidekke will make changes to the floorplan and install new surfaces, new

technical systems, new residents' bathrooms and a new main kitchen. The façades,

roofs and ceilings will also be renovated, and additional insulation will be

added.

The solid wood load-bearing system in the new build will contribute to a

reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and the new technical systems and

additional insulation will reduce the building's energy requirements

significantly. Solar panels on the roof of both the new building and the

existing buildings will further reduce energy needs.

"We are grateful for the confidence placed in us and are very pleased to have

won the competition to extend and redevelop Nygård nursing home. We have solid

expertise in building good health-care buildings, and are particularly pleased

that importance has been attached to sustainable solutions in this project. We

are now looking forward to getting started on the construction work in the

autumn," says Lars N. Hjertås, District Manager at Veidekke Bygg Vestfold and

Telemark.

The redevelopment work will be done one wing at a time, while the other parts of

the nursing home remain in full operation. Construction is slated to begin in

August 2020, with completion scheduled for spring 2023. The contract is included

in the order book for the second quarter 2020.
