Jean Pierre Mustier to retire as UniCredit Ceo at end of current mandate

UniCredit today announced that its current CEO, Jean Pierre Mustier, has informed the board of directors that he will be retiring from his role at the end of his mandate which expires in April 2021, concurrent with the overall board.

Following the successful implementation of the Transform 2019 strategic plan, by the end of this term Mr Mustier will have completed an extensive revamp of the Group that considerably strengthened it both financially and operationally and has allowed UniCredit to withstand the unprecedented COVID-19 related economic upheaval from a position of strength. With the nomination of Professor Pier Carlo Padoan as chairman designate, the work on the future board composition can now be initiated. Mr Mustier will remain in his post to ensure a smooth transition, either until the end of his mandate or until a successor has been appointed.

Mr Mustier and the management team remain fully focused on the execution of the Team 23 strategic plan, as well as actively addressing the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to support staff, customers and the real economy at this difficult moment in time.

Mr Mustier was appointed UniCredit's Group CEO in July 2016, having previously held the role as Deputy General Manager, Head of the Corporate and Investment Banking (2011-15).

The chairman designate and the UniCredit board of directors will undertake a wide-ranging external and internal search for a replacement for Mr Mustier following a thorough and rigorous selection process, reflecting the Group's commitment to strong corporate governance.

Jean Pierre Mustier, outgoing CEO of UniCredit, said: "First of all I want to thank all my colleagues throughout the Group for their extraordinary commitment over the last years. Together we successfully delivered the Transform 2019 plan, and as a result we are in a strong position to continue supporting our clients and communities in all of our countries and remain a pan-European winner.

"Over the last few months, it has become apparent that the Team 23 strategy and its core pillars no longer corresponds to the board's current thinking. Hence I have decided to retire from the Group at the end of my mandate in April 2021, to allow the new board to elaborate a future strategy.

"In any event, I have always said that five years was the ideal stretch of time for someone to remain CEO, and my five years at UniCredit have been, to say the least, an extraordinary experience. I am proud of what we have achieved during my term as CEO and how far the Group has come in such a short time. Keep doing the right thing!"

Professor Cesare Bisoni, chairman of the UniCredit board of directors, said "I believe UniCredit owes a lot to Jean Pierre who took the reins of the Group in a very difficult moment and achieved an incredible turnaround, fully implementing the Transform 2019 Strategic Plan and then strongly leading the Group through the crisis triggered by the pandemic of COVID-19. I am sad for today's decision which nevertheless once again shows his great professionalism and deeply increases my respect for him."

Jean Pierre Mustier si ritirerà dal ruolo di amministratore delegato di UniCredit alla fine del mandato in corso

UniCredit ha annunciato oggi che il suo attuale CEO, Jean Pierre Mustier, ha informato il Consiglio di Amministrazione che si ritirerà dal suo ruolo alla fine del mandato in corso, che scade nell'aprile 2021 insieme a quello dell'intero Consiglio.

Grazie all'attuazione del piano strategico Transform 2019, entro la fine del mandato il Sig. Mustier avrà completato il rinnovamento del Gruppo, che risulta notevolmente rafforzato sia finanziariamente che operativamente, permettendo di affrontare in tutta sicurezza le conseguenze economiche della crisi senza precedenti legata al COVID-19.

Con l'avvenuta scelta del Prof. Padoan a Presidente designato, è ora possibile avviare i lavori sulla futura composizione del Consiglio di Amministrazione. Il Sig. Mustier manterrà il suo incarico fino alla fine del suo mandato o fino alla nomina di un successore per garantire una transizione ordinata.

Il Sig. Mustier e il management team rimangono impegnati sull'esecuzione del piano strategico Team 23 e sulle sfide legate alla pandemia COVID-19, continuando a supportare il personale, i clienti e l'economia reale in questo momento difficile.

Il Sig. Mustier è stato nominato CEO del Gruppo nel luglio 2016, dopo aver ricoperto in precedenza il ruolo di Vice Direttore Generale, Responsabile della Corporate and Investment Banking (2011-15).

Il Presidente designato e il Consiglio di Amministrazione inizieranno una ricerca, sia all'interno che all'esterno del Gruppo, per identificare il nuovo CEO seguendo un processo di selezione accurato e rigoroso che riflette l'impegno del Gruppo per assicurare una solida governance aziendale.

Jean Pierre Mustier, CEO uscente di UniCredit, ha dichiarato: "Innanzitutto desidero ringraziare tutti i colleghi del Gruppo per il loro straordinario impegno negli ultimi anni. Insieme abbiamo realizzato con successo il piano Transform 2019 e, di conseguenza, siamo in una posizione forte per continuare a supportare i nostri clienti e le comunità in tutti i nostri Paesi restando un vero Gruppo pan-Europeo vincente. Nel corso degli ultimi mesi, tuttavia, è emerso che la strategia del Piano Team 23 e i suoi pilastri fondanti non sono più in linea con l'attuale visione del Consiglio di Amministrazione. Di conseguenza ho preso la decisione di lasciare il Gruppo alla fine del mio mandato ad aprile 2021, in modo da consentire al Consiglio di definire la strategia futura. In ogni caso ho sempre sostenuto che cinque anni sono il periodo di tempo ideale per svolgere il ruolo di CEO in una azienda e i miei cinque anni in UniCredit sono stati, per non dire altro, un'esperienza straordinaria. Sono orgoglioso di ciò che abbiamo raggiunto e di quanto realizzato in così poco tempo".

Il Presidente del Consiglio di Amministrazione, Prof. Cesare Bisoni, ha dichiarato "Ritengo che UniCredit debba molto a Jean Pierre, che ha preso le redini del Gruppo in un momento molto delicato riuscendo in una straordinaria inversione di tendenza, portando a compimento con successo il Piano Transform 2019 e guidando fermamente il Gruppo attraverso la crisi iniziata con la pandemia del COVID-19. Sono dispiaciuto per la decisione odierna, che tuttavia mostra ancora una volta la professionalità di Jean Pierre e non fa altro che aumentare la mia stima nei suoi confronti".
