Key Points:
-
TNG to complete acquisition of highly prospective 101.76km[2] tenement in Mount Hardy Copper Field following receipt of FIRB approval for the transaction.
-
Exploration activities including an extensive airborne EM survey to commence within two weeks of completion.
-
Historical rock chip samples from Mount Hardy region range from 5% to 19% copper, up to 18% lead, 1.52% zinc, 2.66 g/t gold, and 170 g/t silver.
-
Limited modern exploration combined with anomalous previous work supports potential for the discovery of new mineralisation at Mount Hardy.
Australian resources company TNG Limited (ASX: TNG) is pleased to advise that it is preparing to complete the acquisition of the Mount Hardy Copper Project in the Northern Territory, after receiving foreign investment approval.
Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) has provided its approval for the proposed acquisition of the highly prospective new tenement, EL 27892, from unlisted company Walla Mines Ltd.
FIRB approval was required because one of TNG’s major strategic shareholders is a Chinese State-owned enterprise ( see recent ASX Announcements on transaction with ECE ).
The new tenement covers the main portion of the historic Mount Hardy Copper Field, which is located adjacent to and immediately south of TNG’s existing tenement ELA 29219, covering the northern extension of the field ( see Figure 1 ).
The Mount Hardy copper mines and prospects, which are located approximately 300km north-west of Alice Springs, were discovered in 1935 and lie within the Lander Group geological formation, which is the dominant host rock for copper and gold mineralisation in the area.
Historical rock chip sampling in the Mount Hardy area by White Industries (early 1990’s) and Tanami Gold NL (2002) returned numerous anomalous copper results, with peak grades of up to 19% copper, 18% lead, 1.52% zinc, 2.66 g/t gold, and 170 g/t silver.
TNG has established that these results could indicate additional potential for Volcanogenic Massive Sulphide mineralisation at depth.

Previous work has been focused on near-surface gold exploration, with only limited drilling to shallow depths of less than 50m and no modern geophysical surveys completed over the area. Historical drilling by the NT Government returned a number of significant copper intersections.
TNG’s Managing Director, Paul Burton, said the completion of the Mount Hardy acquisition would clear the way for exploration programs to commence, marking the beginning of a significant new phase of exploration activity by the Company alongside ongoing evaluation work at the Mount Peake IronVanadium-Titanium Project, for which updated Pre-Feasibility results are currently being compiled following the completion of a key pilot plant metallurgical testwork program in Perth.
“We will have a substantial copper exploration programme underway throughout 2012, both at Mount Hardy and our other copper exploration projects in the Northern Territory including the McArthur and Sandover Projects, as well as the region immediately surrounding Mount Peake,” he said.
