India, Malaysia discuss defence, trade relations

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday held wide-ranging talks with his Malaysian counterpart Zambry Abdul Kadir to expand bilateral cooperation in areas of defence, trade, investment and health.

The two ministers held the talks at the sixth India-Malaysia Joint Commission Meeting (JCM). It is learnt that the broad focus of the deliberations was to enhance the strategic partnership between the two countries.

"A warm welcome to Malaysian Foreign Minister Zambry in Delhi. Our 6th Joint Commission Meeting this evening will take forward our Enhanced Strategic Partnership," Jaishankar said on

X ahead of the meeting. Last week, the MEA said the JCM will review the progress of enhanced strategic partnership in areas of politics, defence, security, economic, trade and investment, health, science and technology. The last JCM was held in Kuala Lumpur in 2011.

The Malaysian foreign ministry on Sunday said both foreign ministers will also exchange views on regional and international matters of mutual interest. "The visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations of the two

countries," it said. "Bound by robust economic partnership and close people-to-people ties, Malaysia and India share a long-standing and substantive relationship," it said.

In a first, vehicles have reached the Amarnath cave as the Border Roads Organisation has expanded road connectivity up to the cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said here on Monday. The widening of the road from Dumail to the Amarnath cave via Baltal base camp in Ganderbal district of central Kashmir has been completed.

The officials said the BRO personnel completed the for-

midable task and created history by expanding road connectivity up to the Amarnath cave shrine. The first set of vehicles has also reached the shrine, the officials added.

The BRO was entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining the twin tracks leading to the cave shrine last year. The BRO's 'Project Bea-

con' is involved in the restoration and improvement of Amarnath Yatra tracks. National Conference

leader Omar Abdullah said playing with the environment in such a way was not good as it was akin to destroying it. He said the annual pilgrimage to the shrine has been going on for years and there was no need to take vehicles there.

Massive syndicate of 102 fake entities busted in Meerut

In a breakthrough in GST fraud, the Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI), Meerut Zonal Unit, accomplished a major feat by cracking down on a large-scale fake invoicing syndicate that issued invoices with a taxable turnover of 1,481 crore, result ing in passing on of fraudulent Input Tax Credit of275 crore through 102 fake firms to over 1,000 beneficiary companies.

Through meticulous data mining and application of mind, DGGI Meerut dismantled the major syndicate operated by four masterminds. One of them, work ing in a placement consultancy firm, was responsible for arrang ing PAN, Aadhaar, electricity bill, address proof, other documents required for GST registration. One mastermind enticed people with perks in exchange for KYC papers.

ALIGARH TO BE NAMED HARIGARH

ALIGARH: The Aligarh Nagar Nigam has passed a reso-

lution seeking a change in the city's name to 'Harigarh'. The resolution, which was passed on Monday, will be sent to the Uttar Pradesh government for consideration, said BJP corporator Sanjay Pandit. The proposal in this regard was moved by Pandit. In 2021, a similar resolution was passed by the District Panchayat and sent to the state government for further action. Some senior ministers of the state had raised the issue during the visit of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to Aligarh on August 21 this year. Aligarh, which houses the famous Aligarh Muslim University, was earlier called Ramgarh, according to the UP government website. In the mid 1700s, the city was renamed Aligarh after its most important fort. The first attempt to change the name of Aligarh was made by former chief minister Kalyan Singh in 1992 but he could not succeed as there was a Congress government at the Centre.
