Lievegem, October 4th 2019 – 3 p.m.
Following today's press coverage of a recall of sliced meat products in the Dutch market by its Dutch subsidiary Offerman B.V., triggered by a possible listeria infection at its location Aalsmeer (the Netherlands), Ter Beke wishes to respond as follows:
The recall was carried out by Offerman on the 3 rd of October 2019 after consultation with the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (Nederlandse Voedsel-en Warenautoriteit – 'NVWA') and in accordance with the applicable rules and procedures. The decision to recall was taken after recent results of quality inspections were evaluated by Offerman Aalsmeer and the NVWA. The initiative to broadly recall these products was a precautionary measure.
Ter Beke wishes to emphasize that the possible contamination and recall only concern products from the Offerman location in Aalsmeer. All customers involved were already informed by Offerman on the 3 rd of October 2019. No other location of the group is involved.
In addition to the recall, Offerman also took and takes all further precautions necessary. The activities at the Aalsmeer location, are temporarily stopped, in consultation with the NVWA, in order to allow further investigation into the nature of the contamination and to take all necessary measures for the future.
We also took note of the declarations from the NVWA and the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (Nederlands Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu – 'RIVM'), that the same listeria strain had been found in cases of illness in the Netherlands, including three deaths and a miscarriage, and in the Offerman location in Aalsmeer. We are currently in contact with the relevant authorities and we fully support further investigations. Offerman takes the necessary actions itself and fully cooperates with the competent authorities.
With all these actions we wish to make clear to our customers and to consumers that food safety is our top priority.
The financial impact of the recall and the temporary cessation of activities at Offerman Aalsmeer on the group results cannot yet be estimated. If it turns out that this impact is material, Ter Beke will inform the market about this.
Listeria are bacteria that occur everywhere in nature. The species Listeria monocytogenes can cause a food infection. The symptoms of Listeria infection are fever and / or head and muscle pain. These symptoms may indicate listeriosis. The bacteria does not usually make healthy people sick. However, pregnant women must pay extra attention to these symptoms, as is the case for people with reduced immunity and the elderly. We advise consumers who show symptoms to consult their doctor.
