The FTSE All-Share Index performed well in the month with the more domestically focused FTSE 250 outperforming the more internationally focused FTSE 100. Second quarter UK GDP was stronger than expected and UK inflation remained in line with the Bank of England target of 2%, however core and services inflation came in higher-than-expected. Commodities were weak in July with significant declines in the oil price. Towards the end of the month there was a wider risk off shift in markets caused by a rotation out of tech stocks to small cap names in the US.
The portfolio performed well in the month with the largest contributors to performance being Marks & Spencer, and banks Barclays and NatWest Group. Performance was negatively impacted by a fall in the share price of Stellantis.
NatWest and Barclays, continue to benefit from the pickup in net interest margins and a benign loan loss cycle. NatWest reported a strong set of results which helped the share price rise 18% over the month. Barclays announce their next set of results in August.
Marks & Spencer saw its share price hit the highest level since 2017. The company continues to perform well from an operational perspective and is making good progress towards its longerterm operating margin targets in food and clothing as well as taking higher market share.
Stellantis has seen some softening in its end markets and is in the process of launching many new models. The combination of these two factors has resulted in some profit downgrades for 2024. Nevertheless, the company is still expected to generate around €4.4 of earnings per share for the current year, placing the shares on a p/e ratio of around 3.6x, whilst offering a dividend yield of 9%.
Despite the strong returns that the Trust has enjoyed over the last eighteen months, we believe that its portfolio of stocks continues to look very undervalued. In our opinion, today's most attractive valuations continue to be found in sectors such as banks, insurance, energy, media and consumer cyclicals.

Past performance is not a guide to future performance. The value of investments and the income from them may fall as well as rise and is not guaranteed; an investor may receive back less than the original amount invested.
