Timothy Y. Chen to join Telstra Board

30 March 2012 – The Telstra Board today announced the appointment of Mr Timothy Y. (Tim) Chen as a non-executive Director. Mr Chen is an internationally recognised technology executive with experience in major global firms in China and the United States.

Telstra Chairman Catherine Livingstone said she was delighted to have attracted someone of Mr Chen’s expertise and calibre to join the Telstra Board.

Mr Chen, a Beijing-based partner with international private equity firm GL Capital Group, has served in senior executive roles for international firms including Microsoft, Motorola and AT&T Bell Laboratories.

“Tim’s career experience aligns well with our strategic growth areas, particularly in our Asian and Network Applications and Services businesses,” Ms Livingstone said.

“Tim brings broad technology, strategic and business experience working with private and public sector entities. We are very pleased to have him joining the Telstra Board.”

Mr Chen said: “I am delighted to have been invited to join the Telstra Board and look forward to contributing to the future of what is recognised as a major global communications player from a strong Australian base.”

Mr Chen was previously CEO for National Basketball Association China from 2007 to 2010, including the management of all television and digital media partnerships; Corporate Vice President of Microsoft and regional CEO from 2003 to 2007; Corporate Vice President for Motorola and Chairman and President of Motorola (China) Electronics from 2001 to 2003 and CEO of Hong Kong listed company 21CN Cybernet from 2000 to 2001. Prior to 2000, Mr Chen spent eight years in China with Motorola, including serving as general manager responsible for sales and marketing for the Greater China Cellular Infrastructure Division. Before that, Mr Chen spent nine years at AT&T Bell Laboratories in the United States.

Mr Chen is a Director of three listed companies in greater China - Sinopac Financial Group, E-Ink Group, and Longmaster Information & Technology Co. Ltd. He holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Chicago and Masters degrees in both Computer Science and Mathematics from Ohio State University.

Mr Chen’s appointment will be effective 1 April 2012 and will be subject to shareholder approval at Telstra’s next Annual General meeting.

Upon this appointment, Telstra’s Board will comprise Catherine Livingstone (Chairman), David Thodey (Chief Executive Officer), Timothy Chen, Geoffrey Cousins, Russell Higgins, John Mullen, Nora Scheinkestel, John Stocker, Steven Vamos and John Zeglis.
