Telstra Chief Operations Officer Greg Winn to return to United States
Telstra Chief Executive Officer Sol Trujillo today announced that the company’s Chief Operations Officer, Greg Winn, would leave the company on January 31 to return to his home in the United States.
Mr Winn originally agreed to join Telstra for two years when he first arrived in Australia in August 2005. After three-and-a-half years, he is now returning to his family home in Phoenix, Arizona, to pursue his personal interests.
As COO, Mr Winn has headed Telstra’s networks and operations, and has been a key driver of the transformation of the company’s IT systems, networks, product development and procurement processes. Mr Winn was integral to the building of Telstra’s nationwide Next G™ mobile network, as well as the company’s Next IP™ network. Mr Winn also oversaw delivery of dramatic field workforce productivity improvements focused on reducing costs while demonstrably improving the customer experience.
Mr Winn will remain a consultant to the CEO until March 31, 2009, to ensure a smooth transition.
“There is no finer telecommunications operational executive in the world than Greg Winn. Telstra and Australia have been fortunate to have benefited from Greg’s skills, leadership and wisdom over the past three years,” Mr Trujillo said.
“I have truly valued the sacrifices that Greg has made to be part of this journey. I admire and respect all that he has accomplished at Telstra. Greg will leave behind a very talented team of executives who have proven to be world-class during Telstra’s Transformation over the past three years.”
Mr Winn said he was extremely proud of the achievements of his team at Telstra and was confident that the company’s operations were being left in the hands of truly capable and experienced executives.
“I will return to the United States with pride and satisfaction at what we have achieved in the past three-and-a-half years. With a CEO like Sol, the job is never done, but we have already achieved many of the objectives of our five-year transformation and we are on track to meet the targets we set back in November 2005,” Mr Winn said.
Mr Winn’s position as COO will not be filled. Instead, most of his direct reports will report to Mr Trujillo. Already members of the CEO Leadership Team, they include: Tom Lamming (Senior Vice President, Transformation and Technology), Holly Kramer (Group Managing Director, Product Management), Michael Rocca (Group Managing Director, Networks and Services) and Stuart Lee (Executive Director, Program Office). Ian Wheatley (Executive Director, Procurement) will report to Chief Financial Officer John Stanhope.

Mr Lamming is the overall lead for Telstra’s Information Technology and Transformation program and has had decades of experience planning, designing, and implementing integrated business solutions in the communications industry. Mr Lamming recently announced the promotion of John McInerney to Group Managing Director, IT. Mr McInerney also sits on the CEO Leadership Team.
Mr Rocca, who has worked at Telstra for 40 years, manages 19,000 staff encompassing all of Telstra's technology, networks, infrastructure-build and service delivery groups.
Mr Lee oversees the program office that has guided the implementation of the Transformation plans to ensure they have remained coordinated and on track. Mr Lee has been at Telstra more than 30 years.
Ms Kramer is accountable for the development and lifecycle management of the company's $18 billion domestic product portfolio, including fixed, wireless, broadband and enterprise services.
