John Stewart and John Mullen to join Telstra board
Telstra’s board today announced the appointment of business leaders John Stewart and John Mullen as non-executive directors.
Mr Stewart is currently the Managing Director and Group Chief Executive of the National Australia Bank Ltd. He was previously Deputy Chief Executive of Barclays Bank and Chief Executive of Woolwich PLC.
Mr Mullen is currently the Chief Executive Officer of DHL Express. He is also a member of the board of management of Deutsche Post World Net, the parent of DHL.
“We are very pleased that John Stewart and John Mullen have agreed to join the Telstra board, because they both bring exceptional national and international commercial experience to our board,” Telstra Chairman, Mr Donald McGauchie, said today.
“John Stewart has led a distinguished career in the financial services and products industry in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom. He will bring exceptional insight and experience to the board.
"John Mullen is a proven CEO and non-executive director and is highly respected for his strategic abilities. Having worked for over two decades in a multitude of senior positions with different multinationals, John will bring enormous experience to the board.
"Both are highly respected and recognised for their significant experience working in both Australian and international markets. They will bring their particular understanding of world’s best practice to Telstra as the transformation continues and as we benchmark Telstra’s performance globally,” Mr McGauchie said.
The appointment of Mr Stewart and Mr Mullen will require endorsement at the next Telstra Annual General Meeting on 21 November 2008. Upon their appointments, Telstra will have 10 board members.
John Stewart's appointment is effective from 28 April 2008 and John Mullen’s appointment will be effective from 1 July 2008.

Biography – Mr John Stewart
John Stewart is Group Chief Executive Officer of National Australia Bank, a position he has held since February 2004. He joined NAB in August 2003 as Chief Executive, Europe and Principal Board Member.
Mr Stewart has had a long and successful career in the finance industry since he first joined Woolwich PLC in 1977. Mr Stewart was appointed to the Board of the Woolwich in 1995 and became Chief Executive in 1996. Following the Woolwich’s acquisition by Barclays PLC in October 2000, Mr Stewart was appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer and became a member of the Barclays Group Board and Group Executive Committee. Recently, Mr Stewart was a member of the Prime Minister’s Task Group on Emissions Trading.

Biography – Mr John Mullen
Mr Mullen is Chief Executive Officer of DHL Express and a member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN), the parent company of DHL, positions he has held since 2006. He joined DPWN as an Advisor in 1994, becoming Chief Executive Officer of DHL Express Asia Pacific in 2002, and Joint Chief Executive, DHL Express and Chief Executive Officer DHL Express USA in 2005.
Mr Mullen is well regarded as a senior industry veteran, having worked for over two decades in a multitude of senior positions with different multinationals. His corporate experience includes 10 years with the TNT Group, with two years as its Chief Operating Officer. From 1991 to 1994, he held the position of Chief Executive Officer of TNT Express Worldwide, based in the Netherlands.
