The Swedish Civil Aviation Authority (LFV) and Arlanda Energi have been chosen by the consulting engineering company Sweco to receive the 2009 Swedish Energy Prize. In recent years the airport has reduced its energy consumption by one fourth and the business model will now be spread to other airports seeking to improve their energy-efficiency.
"We have focused determinedly on energy issues for several years and the results speak for themselves. We have managed to reduce our heating and electricity requirement by an amount of energy equal to that used by all of Landvetter Airport, an mid-sized Swedish airport," says Kent Arvidsson, President of Arlanda Energi.
Arlanda Energi was established in 2006 to handle all energy-related matters at the airport. A clearly goal-oriented approach and an active commitment on the part of the management have contributed to the successful results.
"Arlanda Energi has created a business model in which it has striven to optimise operations, implement new technology and involve its employees as a means for minimising the airport's environmental impact," says Karin Annerwall Parö at Sweco.
Since 1984, Sweco has been presenting the Swedish Energy Prize to technical ideas and innovations that have been tested in real life and proven effective in saving energy. The year's prize will be awarded at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm on 17 November during an inspiration day with a focus on sustainability.
The jury consists of: Carl-Erik Nyquist, Jury Chairman, Karin Annerwall Parö, Sweco, Tomas Kåberger, Director General of the Swedish Energy Agency, Lars Nilsson, Editor in Chief of Ny Teknik, Louise Trygg, Researcher in Linköping, Lennart Jagemar, Associate Professor of Building Services Engineering, Per Fahlén, Professor of Building Services Engineering and Lars Olof Matsson, Jury Secretary, Sweco.
