Emergency Mobile SMS usage soars as schools battle storms

14 June, 2012: MGM Wireless (ASX:MWR) reports that schools using its SMS communication service have sent more than 200,000 messages in the past two days to keep parents and the school community updated in storm-stricken areas.

This is around 300 percent more than a typical day, when messages are sent for matters such as truancy and reminders for special events.

Most of the messages have been sent by schools in Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria, the first states to be hit by the severe weather, but MGM CEO Mark Fortunatow says the trend is expected to continue as the storm blasts across the country.

“In today’s society, there are so many ways to communicate, especially with social media such as Twitter and Facebook, but SMS messaging is unique,” Mr Fortunatow said. “It’s still the only way to reliably communicate en masse to thousands of people and be sure messages will be delivered promptly directly to people’s mobiles.”

Mr Fortunatow added that the volume of messages being sent during the storms was “staggering”, and the company may book record SMS traffic and revenue from SMS traffic for the current quarter.

“Schools already using SMS are now quite sophisticated users of text messaging and they understand the benefits and are clearly benefitting from being able to reach their entire school communities instantly,” he said.

Some examples of messages being sent from schools include:

“Students on CC Year 9 Camps have been moved to indoor shelter tonight due to extreme forcast weather conditions. “

“Students who attend Active After School on Thursday 14/6/12 please note it has been cancelled tomorrow due to weather conditions.”

“Celebration Day tomorrow 13/06/12 postponed due to forecast bad weather. Refer to following message re possible school closure.”

“Due to severe weather warning, tonight's Parent Info Evening has been postponed to June 19th 7pm.”

“Please read the letter distributed to students regarding the severe weather forecast this evening and possible closure tomorrow."
