"Simplex Castings Leads Consortium to Establish India’s First Green Hydrogen-Powered DRI Plant."
Simplex Castings Limited , along with a consortium of esteemed partners, has been selected to lead the development of India’s first green hydrogen-powered Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant. This pioneering pilot project, which will feature a production capacity of 40 tons per day, is part of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and aligns with the goals of the Ministry of Steel (MoS) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) commitment to advancing sustainable practices in the steel industry.
The project brings together Simplex Castings with consortium partners BSBK Pvt Ltd, Ten Eighty Investment, and IIT Bhilai, who will each contribute their expertise to achieve the project’s ambitious objectives. The new DRI plant will utilize cutting-edge vertical shaft technology, replacing traditional carbon-based fuels with green hydrogen as the primary reducing agent. This innovative approach results in water as the sole byproduct, eliminating CO₂ emissions typically associated with steel production.
The estimated project cost of INR 230 crore will receive strong government backing, with 70% of the funding, or approximately INR 161 crore, covered by state support. This substantial financial contribution underscores India’s commitment to green hydrogen technology as a key element of sustainable industry growth, with the goal of reducing carbon emissions across the steel sector.
In addition to its environmental benefits, the project is expected to spur local economic growth, creating job opportunities and bolstering supply chains. As India advances its green economy, this pilot facility is poised to serve as a scalable model for clean, sustainable steel production.
Commenting on the development Mr. Ketan Shah, Chairman - Simplex Castings Ltd said :
“ I am pleased to announce that Simplex Casting has been selected to receive a prestigious grant and spearhead this project as part of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. With this support, we are embarking on an innovative journey to integrate 100% hydrogen in a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant, aimed at reducing our carbon footprint and leading the transition towards green steel. Our gratitude goes to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Ministry of Steel for recognizing our potential and backing our efforts to make meaningful contributions to India’s green energy goals. This project not only aligns with our mission to foster environmental responsibility but also strengthens our role in advancing clean technology within the industry. We look forward to collaborating with our partners, leveraging cutting-edge technologies, and driving a sustainable future. Together, we will continue to break new ground, paving the way for low-carbon solutions and helping position India as a global leader in green steel production. ”
