Sanofi-aventis U.S. Chairman Tim Rothwell to Retire after an Outstanding Career

Paris, France - February 24, 2009 - Sanofi-aventis U.S. announced today that Tim Rothwell, Chairman, sanofi-aventis U.S., will be retiring after an outstanding career.

Chris Viehbacher, Chief Executive Officer of sanofi-aventis declared : "With more than 35 years of experience, Tim has made an exceptional contribution throughout his tenure in our Group and brought sanofi-aventis to the forefront of the industry in the U.S. I would like to thank Tim sincerely and I wish him the very best in his retirement."

Mr. Rothwell will be stepping down as Chairman on March 31, 2009, and will continue to oversee key projects and responsibilities through completion until his retirement later this year.

Mr. Rothwell joined sanofi-aventis in 2003 as President and CEO of Sanofi-Synthelabo U.S., and was instrumental in the formation of sanofi-aventis U.S. in 2004. In March 2007, he became Chairman of sanofi-aventis U.S., and has since focused on initiatives to advance the company's impact in the U.S. through Policy and Communications efforts.

Prior to joining Sanofi-Synthelabo, Tim Rothwell served as Executive Vice President and President, Global Prescription Business with Pharmacia Corporation. From 1972 to 1998, he held a variety of management positions in leading pharmaceutical companies, including Rhone Poulenc Rorer and Sandoz Pharmaceuticals.
