Business Brief

This Family owns 20 Electric scooters

Mumbai, Tarun Mehta, the co-founder and CEO of Ather Energy Limited, recently tweeted on X about a family from Bengaluru that owns 20 Ather scooters. The Kotharis, a close-knit family involved in the saree business, own a fleet of 20 Ather electric scooters - including the 450X, 450 Apex and Rizta. Spanning three generations, the youngest rider is Pragya Kothari, aged 19, and the eldest is Mahendra Kothari, 61.

Their journey with Ather began in 2017, long before EVs were a mainstream choice in India. Bharat Kothari, the family’s first adopter, prebooked his Ather scooter ahead of the launch of the 450 series in 2018. Inspired by his experience, his son Sourabh soon followed, and the rest of the family wasn’t far behind. What began as a single purchase quickly grew into a collective preference for Ather scooters - driven by Ather’s approach towards building the EV ecosystem, the availability of charging infrastructure, and hassle-free service experiences.

The Kotharis have come to be known as the “Ather Family” in their community, owing to their unanimous decision to adopt Ather scooters as their mode of transport. The family swears by Ather products, so much so that Ather scooters are even passed on to the younger generations when they become of riding age. They also often recommend Ather scooters to their friends, and have convinced many others to purchase Ather scooters as well.

Through initiatives like Ather Community Day and open houses, Ather provides a platform for owners to connect, share feedback, and stay updated on upcoming features and innovations. The Kothari family members too have been active members of the Ather community, often participating in both the Ather Community Day and their open houses, sharing feedback and their experiences with company and other community members.

Digital payments record doubledigit jump year-on-year: RBI Mumbai, Jan 30 (IANS) Digital payments across India recorded a double-digit jump of 11.1 per cent year-on-year (YoY) as on September 2024, according to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) index that measures the adoption of online transactions, according to a Central Bank statement.

The RBI's Digital Payments Index (RBI-DPI) for September 2024 stands at 465.33 up from 445.5 for March 2024.The increase in the RBI-DPI index was driven by growth in payment infrastructure and payment performance across the country over the period, te RBI said. The RBI has been publishing a composite RBI-DPI since January 1, 2021 with March 2018 as the base to capture the extent of digitisation of payments across the country. The index is published on a semi-annual basis. The index comprises five parameters that enable the measurement of the deepening and penetration of digital payments in the country over different periods. These parameters are Payment Enablers (weightage 25 per cent); Payment Infrastructure - Demand-side factors (10 per cent); Payment Infrastructure - Supply-side factors (15 per cent); Payment Performance (45 per cent); and Consumer Centricity (5 per cent). The RBI had highlighted in a report earlier this week that UPI has been the most significant contributor to the growth of digital payments in India due to its usefulness and ease of use.

Whirlpool to reduce stake in India unit, stock tanks 20 pc to hit lower circuit

New Delhi, Jan 30 (IANS) US-based home appliances company Whirlpool Corporation on Thursday announced plans to reduce its ownership in its Indian subsidiary, Whirlpool of India Limited, to around 20 per cent by mid to late 2025. In the early trade, the shares of Whirlpool India dropped by 20 per cent to hit the lower circuit, trading at Rs 1,262.The company, which currently holds a 51 per cent stake, said in a stock exchange filing that it would sell shares in one or more transactions but will remain the largest shareholder even after the sale.

Whirlpool expects to generate net cash proceeds of $550 million to $600 million from this planned stake reduction.Despite the sale, the company reaffirmed its commitment to the Indian market. In a stock exchange filing, the company stated that Whirlpool India would continue to be an important part of its global business and has strong long-term growth potential. "Whirlpool India will remain a relevant part of Whirlpool Corp's portfolio and we continue to believe Whirlpool India has a strong long-term trajectory for growth," the company said in its filing. The company also emphasised that the move would give Whirlpool India more flexibility to adapt to changing industry trends and accelerate its growth."By reducing our stake, we are allowing Whirlpool India to operate with greater independence, which will help it focus on faster expansion," the statement said.
