Rio Tinto announces that Simon Thompson, a non-executive director of Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Limited, was appointed a director of 3i Group plc with effect from 13 April 2015.  He will become non-executive chairman of the 3i board following the company's 2015 AGM which is expected to be convened in June 2015. Simon will step down as director of Amec Foster Wheeler plc and Sandvik AB in May 2015.

This information is disclosed to the London Stock Exchange (LSE) in accordance with the requirements under paragraph 9.6.14R of the United Kingdom Listing Rules relating to the disclosure of new directorships in publically quoted companies by a director of the company. As part of its dual listed company structure Rio Tinto voluntarily notifies the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) of the above appointment.
