TIMING OF MURROR

Gujarat model: When bridges compete to collapse

In the age of Artificial Intelligence, states appear to be engaged in a different competition altogether — not for innovation, efficiency or governance, but for corruption, negligence and spectacular administrative embarrassment. Bihar and Gujarat, it appears, are running neck-and-neck in an unofficial national championship of collapsing infrastructure and alleged irregularities.

For years, Bihar has enjoyed many innovative reputation in this peculiar category. Over the last five years, dozens of bridges have collapsed, with reports suggesting that more than 20

recent four-to-five-year period. Yet Gujarat, the self-proclaimed laboratory of development, appears determined not to be Grit Sahrad. Between 2020 and 2025, more than a dozen bridges and major structures in Gujarat either collapsed entirely or suffered catastrophic structural damage. Political and media reports have cited as many as 16 separate bridge failures, while government data reportedly identified 42 major and minor bridges across the state as having collapsed between 2019 and 2024.

The award, therefore, appears destined for Gujarat — the "Best Model State" in the art of public life. Reapplying before public trust does. One imagines a glittering ceremony when the trophy for Outstanding Achievement in Structural Uncertainty is jointly received by Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, under themselves applause from contractors, consultants and committee-makers. Perhaps more awards are quietly waiting in the wings — for alleged irregularities in medicine, unauthorized multi-sorrel construction, and assorted governance miracles that defy explanation. Pharmaceutical, mercifully, may not yet qualify for this carrival of civic collapse.

This is not fiction: under though it may sound. These are incidents recorded in the media. Today, Gujarat has added yet another leather to its already overcrowded cap. In fact, for Harvard, MIT and even IBM Ahmedabad, the "Gujarat Model" may soon become a fascinating case study — not merely by dynamics or administration, but in fact infrastructure can collapse faster than official accountability.

Once again, a large question mark hangs over the quality of bridges being constructed in government and semi-government projects in Gujarat. A substantial section of the railway overbridge under construction between Vadodara and Adas stations (Gate No. 250) in Adas village of Anand district suddenly collapsed on Saturday. The entire span between the two main pillars reportedly gave way without warning. The bridge, being constructed under the Gati Shakti Unit of Vadodara, crutted dramatically, triggering alarm and outrage.

Fortunately, no laboratory or vehicles were present beneath the structure at the time. Otherwise, while today is merely an engineering scandal might have become a full-scale human tragedy.

What makes the episode particularly troubling is that this was no medieval experiment involving bamboo poles and hopeful prayers. The bridge was being constructed using modern prestressed girded bridge technology. Yet the past cap — the strongest upper section of the pillar designed to bear immense structural load — reportedly failed custom-pitically. Engineers would agree that such sagging or collapse of a girded form the past cap raises serious questions regarding construction quality, material standards, protection, and even design calculations.

The obvious question now echoes across Gujarat: Why does this procession of collapsing bridges refuse to stop?

The Anand incident is hardly an isolated mishap. Rather, it forms part of an unsettling trilogy of infrastructure failures in recent times.

On 7 November 2024, near Vanad, a major accident occurred during the construction work of the Balla Traze Project.

On 9 July 2024, a bridge under construction over the Gambles River reportedly collapsed.

And now, on 10 May 2026, at Adas, the girded between two railway bridge pillars cradled down with startling force.

Dams and debris, sadly, are becoming Gujarat's most reliable infrastructure statistics.

These recurring incidents raise disturbing questions: Have safety standards for contractors and executing agencies remained confined to glossy presentations, official files and ceremonial speeches? In structural integrity now merely a PowerPoint concept!

The Gargling of the Girdle Bridge is a new concept that has been used to create a new system of communication, water management, reducing plants use, and maintaining a clean environment. The minister later presented medical and appreciation certificates to the participant.

The members also encouraged physical fitness, sportsmanship, and social responsibility among children while highlighting the role of the younger generation in building a cleaner Tamil Nadu. Government officials, civic representatives, students, parents, and members of the public attended the event.
