ASX Market Announcements Australian Securities Exchange Sydney NSW 2000
PHYLOGICA APPOINTS JEREMY CURNOCK COOK AS NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
PERTH, AUSTRALIA: March 1, 2012 – Phylogica Ltd (ASX: PYC, XETRA: PH7), a leading Australian peptide drug discovery company, announced today the appointment of Mr Jeremy Curnock Cook as a Non-Executive Director. Mr Curnock Cook will sit on the Remuneration Committee and also the Audit Committee.
Mr Jeremy Curnock Cook, aged 62, is an experienced entrepreneur, fund manager, executive and non-executive director in the life science sector. Mr Curnock Cook is currently Executive Chairman of International Bioscience Managers Limited. He was formerly the head of the life science private equity team at Rothschild Asset Management in the UK and an active investor in the Australian life science sector. At Rothschild, Mr Curnock Cook was responsible for the launch of the first dedicated biotechnology fund for the Australian market and the launch of a joint venture with Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation for the creation of Healthcare Ventures, an investment vehicle dedicated to seed stage investments in Europe, as well as the conception and launch of the International Biotechnology Trust (IBT). IBT was launched in 1994 as a publicly listed investment trust focused internationally on mid stage investments in life sciences.
Over his 40-year career, Mr Curnock Cook has specialised in creating value in emerging biotech enterprises, through active participation with management. He has served on over 40 Boards in various roles, including Chairman, of private and public biotechnology companies listed on NASDAQ, LSE, TSX and ASX.
Phylogica's Chairman, Dr Doug Wilson, commented on the appointment: “We are very pleased to welcome Jeremy as a Non-Executive Director. Jeremy has been a prominent member of the global biotech sector for many years and has direct experience in advising management on the transformation of novel technology-orientated biotech companies, like Phylogica, into leading commercial enterprises.”
Dr Wilson continued: “We welcome the fact that Jeremy likes to be actively involved with those companies on whose Boards he sits, supporting activities ranging from the development of new business plans to the establishment of new corporate collaborations and the execution of M & A strategies. As Phylogica seeks to build on the success of its discovery alliance activities as a core revenue and value driver, we believe Jeremy’s experience will be invaluable to the Board.”
Mr Curnock Cook responded: “I was particularly attracted to the opportunity to develop Phylogica’s strategy, because it is not often that one has the opportunity to help grow a company, which controls global access to a new source of proprietary therapeutics. This is an important period of transition for the company since it has recently entered the commercialisation phase, as it continues to validate its technology, both scientifically and through accumulating Pharma alliances. I believe that if Phylogica continues on its current trajectory, the Company will prove an attractive acquisition target for the pharmaceutical industry.”
