The Hague – 5 November 2018
As from January 2019, the standard rate for sending domestic letters will be €0.87, up from €0.83. This increase of 4.8% is well within the tariff headroom for rates by the regulator, the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM).
As from 1 January 2019, PostNL will increase the rates for sending letters in the Netherlands and from the Netherlands abroad. The standard rate for letters in the Netherlands will change from €0.83 to €0.87. When using a franking machine, the rate will change from €0.77 to €0.81. The new standard rate for international letters will be €1.45, up from €1.40. The rate for the postage stamp code, which can be bought online and with the PostNL app, remains unchanged at €0.83.
Resi Becker, director of Mail in the Netherlands: 'With this decision, we balance the interests of our customers and other stakeholders. The relatively modest increase in the price of a postage stamp is necessary to keep the mail service reliable, accessible and affordable for everyone in the Netherlands. The impact of the annual decrease in mail volume are absorbed by means of cost savings, and by the annual price increase. This is how we continue to be the right partner for our customers, to be a social employer and a financially healthy company.'
The price of the special December stamp for the festive season is set at €0.78, once again 5 cents lower in price than the standard rate for mail up to 50 grams. As from 5 November 2018, the December stamps can be purchased from post offices, parcel points and postage stamp outlets or from postnl.nl.
Each year, the Dutch supervisory authority for the postal market, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), determines the tariff headroom for the universal postal service. The ACM has verified that the new rates comply with the statutory tariff headroom.
