PRESS RELEASE
PLANETEL JOINS THE UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL COMPACT AND PLANTS ITS OWN FOREST TO COMBAT THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
Treviolo, 10 January 2022 – Planetel S.p.A., parent company of a group operating in the telecommunications sector nationwide, listed on Euronext Growth Milan, announces - in the context of its plan for corporate sustainability and implementation of ESG factors - that it has joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). https://www.unglobalcompact.org/what-is-gc/participants/149416-Planetel-S-p-A-
The UNGC is the global movement of sustainable businesses and stakeholders that has drawn up a "compact" between the United Nations and the private sector, under which companies commit to incorporating the Ten Principles relating to human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption in their strategies, by actively participating in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the Agenda 2030, thus laying the foundations for a new corporate culture and operating model.
This multi-stakeholder initiative currently has about 16,000 corporate and non-business members, who use innovation, partnerships and collaboration to work to construct a more inclusive, sustainable market and a more responsible business model.
UNGC is a global initiative present in 60 countries with strong local roots, and operates in the various states through local networks that support and guide members in their transition to sustainability.
By joining the UNGC, Planetel has committed to incorporating the Ten Principles set out in the "compact" into its own company policy, to contributing to economic and social development, to protecting the environment and to issuing an annual non-financial report (NFR) to inform its stakeholders on the progress made.
"Nowadays, an integrated strategy that embraces production factors and ESG factors is essential for a modern business model," declares Bruno Pianetti, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Planetel. "We can't just consider ESG factors as additional drivers to be placed alongside our industrial ones. We have to change our viewpoint and adopt a holistic approach. In Planetel's opinion, a company's industrial strategy must be based not only on the analysis of its strengths and weaknesses and the identification of risks and opportunities, but also on the identification of the main sustainable production challenges, starting from the key social, economic and environmental trends in the long term."
What's more, to combat the effects of climate change and adopt green and carbon neutral strategies by cutting pollutant CO2 emissions, Planetel announces that it has created its own plantation in Kenya, which already contains 200 trees, within the programme run by Treedom, the Italian B Company that organises social and environmental development projects involving the planting of trees in developing countries to reduce CO2 emissions, with the aim of making our planet greener and more eco-sustainable, while also aiding the economic development of local communities. Planetel has planted a tree for every employee, with the future aim of also planting a tree for its customers and suppliers, to engage every one of them in the common goal of environmental sustainability. The Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, are part of the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development.

The Planetel forest includes a number of crop-yielding tree species, mainly Papaya, Coffee, Passion Fruit, Markhamia, Hazel, Krevillea, etc. Planting a tree forms part of a planning, training, care and maintenance process that lasts over the years, and Treedom has constructed a traceability system that guarantees projects' transparency, by photographing and geolocating all trees planted, and also recording the relative GPS coordinates.
This is a global partnership designed to reduce inequalities and stimulate economic growth through cooperation to conserve the oceans and forests. By means of tree planting activities in Asia, Africa, South America and Italy, Planetel contributes to the achievement of the 10 Goals to ensure a sustainable future.
For local farmers, the project is beneficial from both environmental and socioeconomic points of view. In fact, the programme will benefit not only the environment but also the families living in the area who are to care for the plantations, because the crops will provide them with a future income and thus aid social and economic development, while simultaneously ensuring the survival of the plantations themselves. Therefore, local communities are directly involved as an integral part of projects.
Treedom brings together about 8,000 businesses that want to make a positive contribution, and works through the world's first web platform that allows people to plant a tree remotely and follow the evolution of the relative project online. Since its foundation in Florence in 2010 about 2,509,000 trees have been planted in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Italy. All trees are planted directly by local communities - there are currently more than 100,000 farmers actively involved in projects - and help to generate environmental, social and economic benefits. Thanks to this innovative social business model, in 2014 Treedom became a Certified B Corporation, a member of the network of businesses committed to outstanding environmental and social performances.
