Former Chief Operating Officer, India and South East Asia, Bharti Airtel Ltd Ex-Chairman COAI
Ajai Puri is a global Telecom, Media and FMCG executive with over 40 years of experience in starting and building, growing, transforming businesses and creating shareholder value in South Asia. He most recently was the Chief Operating Officer (COO), India & South Asia for Bharti Airtel Limited [NSE: BHARTIARTL], retired on 31[st] Dec’21. For over 17 years at Bharti Airtel, Ajai led various businesses, driving strategic change, operational efficiency and commercial excellence, resulting in significant levels of longterm growth in both Market Share and profitability. He was also the longest serving member of the Airtel Management Board (12+ years) . He also served as the Chairman, Cellular Operators Association India (COAI) during 2020-22 , an Indian non-government industry association and advocacy group focused mainly on telecom and digital industry.
Ajai is credited with significantly transforming Airtel’s market capabilities and is considered monumental in helping the telco increase its revenue market share significantly to highest ever 37% share in a rapidly consolidating and fiercely fought market during his stint as India Operations Director / COO in the last 8 years. Ajai also helped Airtel grow its wireline broadband business, nearly doubling the consumer base in the last 2 years. Airtel also launched its own mobile banking operations, music and video streaming apps, creating very strong consumer propositions beyond connectivity.
Formerly, he was Director and CEO, DTH Business (2009-2011) wherein he launched and handled DTH business for Airtel . Coming from behind and being the 5[th] operator to launch digital TV services in India, Airtel climbed to 24%+ market share in just 2 years post launch .
Prior to joining Bharti Airtel, Ajai served as the Business Head & CEO at Cargill Foods India . In his 4-year tenure at Cargill, he conceptualized and launched brand for staple food category for Cargill in India. Today, Cargill’s food business is a very large business in India with ~ $2bn revenue and being the 2[nd] largest edible oil brand in India.
Ajai began his career with VST India Ltd [NSE: VSTIND], an associate company of British American Tobacco (UK) [NYSE: BTI], where, in his last assignment, he led sales operations in India and Middle East . Ajai grew rapidly to become the youngest functional leader and being on management board of VST .
Ajai Currently is engaged with few start-ups, advising and guiding the entrepreneurs and emerging businesses and is a partner with SVP, India.
Ajai is a passionate about reading and current affairs. He also has a keen interest in cricket and badminton sports. Ajai resides in Gurgaon, India with his family and spends a significant amount of his time traveling. Ajai has daughter, Aparajita, Partner with McKinsey & Co, and son, Aditai, Sr. Engagement Manager, also with McKinsey & Co. Madhu, wife, a garment designer by profession.
